I love this cardigan and thought about buying it as a treat for recent weight loss but I have a nagging suspicion it won’t look stylish?

Sorry but I hate it - colour, style, everything.
But if you’re doubtful it’s probably not a good purchase - buy something you love instead! And well done on the weight loss x

It's 100% merino. What's "not nice" about that?

Very very itchy, that's what.

Overtheatlantic · 03/09/2025 14:46

There’s so many reasons to give it a thumbs down, but I still love the look of it. Ah well.

Merino wool is not usually itchy, in fact it's used for base layers/thermals next to your skin. Possibly getting confused with other types /breeds of wool.

Having said that, it does look suspiciously cheap and it's a good point about the ethics of merino production. And then the risk of shrinking/pilling which again, good quality merino knitwear shouldn't be susceptible to, but it looks fuzzy even in the photo.

I was "burnt" last winter buying a jumper from Jigsaw, £90 or so, 60% Wool, 35% Polyamide, 5% Cashmere. Started going bobbly after an hours wear. What a waste when they could have used a higher wool content and left out the cashmere.

Charabanc · 03/09/2025 16:00

Short cardigans are very "in" at the moment. They make me look like a nana, but if you like it then go for it!

If I wear merino wool then I itch and itch and itch. It doesn't suit me at all.

You know what I mean.

I'm 59, don't come at me!

Do you think so? I've been wearing lots of M&S men's merino jumpers over the last couple of winters. I wear them next to my skin. My skin can be sensitive and prone to eczema, but I find the merino really soft and trouble free. For years I only wore cashmere next to my skin, but merino is half the price, still very soft, harder wearing and can go in the washing machine.

No I don't know what you mean. What do grandmothers wear?

pinknailvarnish1 · 04/09/2025 16:53

I'm 55 and that screams Old Lady cardigan to me. And £49! Bloody hell, they should wear a mask and striped jumper. Try Vinted instead.

Why can't you and pinknailvarnish1 just say you don't like it or it's hideous? Why the unthinking ageism? What the hell is "an old lady cardigan"?

I see you can't actually answer the question "what do grandmothers wear"?

UpMyself · 04/09/2025 21:56

Hear, hear.

NoVibrato · 04/09/2025 22:04

Yes! I'm granny age and it is simply an utterly horrid and unkind color and for most bodies an utterly unflattering shape and would never be allowed to get in shouting distance of my ample bust or my hourglass figure or my pale complexion.

mycatismyworld · 05/09/2025 08:06

I think it looks lovely but 100% merino for £50 quid, something doesn't add up. I had a merino short sleeved top,was my mothers,I gave it away when it was about 30 years old,it was indestructible.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 05/09/2025 11:14

I kind of love it but it reminds me of something my grandad would have worn. He wasn’t exactly stylish but would have absolutely rocked this.

NotMeNoNo · 05/09/2025 12:24

This is the knitting design from 2001 I was thinking of, much more cropped and neat fitting. Argyle cardigans are clearly a trend again but it really comes down to details.

Because grandmothers can, and do, wear whatever they like. I am grandmother-age and wear Hush, mostly. I was using the word "nana" as a shorthand to a type of woman.

I'm not sure why you're getting your knickers in a twist over this, I said the cardigan wasn't for me, but for OP to wear it if she likes it.

Still doesn't answer my question. "Nana" is short for grandmother. What "type of women" is a 'nana" beyond a grandmother?

It's unthinking ageism.

I'm 66. Talking about "nana clothes" and "old lady" clothes is ageist- whatever your age.

And as pointed out- that advert is ageist too.
