Black hair dye

Has anyone had their natural hair dyed black at a salon? What’s your experience? Or those who use box dye, what brand do you use?

I used to dye my hair black with box dye years ago. Been getting balayage but I’m sick of it and I miss my old goth look (it feels more me). I would rather go to a salon now to make sure I get an even cover but I’m not sure if most salons would try and talk me out of it.

I’m almost 49, pale skin (in pretty decent condition considering, lol) and my hair is long. The look I want to go to is an off duty Dita Von Teese (attached). Thank you!

I dyed my hair black for years

In my goth days I used recital preference in black 2 then I grew that out and used Casting creme gloss in darkest brown 3 which still looked black but more natural as it wasn't as harsh.

I loved it , but I have too many greys in my roots now.

I’m naturally dark, but do dye it black. I use Live box dye or Novahair as I need to do my roots at least every 3 weeks due to grey hairs.

Thank you @indoorplantqueen & @Mairzydotes I’ll look into both. I’m quite excited about going back to black!

With you saying you’ve had balayage, I’m assuming that means that your hair has been bleached and is currently quite light in places.

Unless your hair is already toned to a warmer, darker colour, I’d recommend going to a professional stylist to start with, as your hair may need “filling” for the black to look deep enough and to stop it fading too quickly.

Putting black straight over bleached hair can cause it to look almost hollow and dull and, as most black hair dyes have a blue tone to them it could also pull green.

A hairstylist would pre tone with a warmer colour (usually copper) to get a deep, rich black. From there you should be able to top it up at home with one of the suggestions above.

@WifeOfBethandRip thank you. I agree, I think initially I need to go to a salon first. The last time I had balayage was about 9 months ago. I’ve just been getting the roots done so the bleached parts are on their way out. A good cut would remove a lot of it. The bleached hair looks awful and brassy at the moment.

I dye mine black and have tried most of the box dyes available in Superdrug/Boots etc, but the best one I have found is the blue black linked below. It's £3 in Savers and is definitely the darkest black dye I've found. I end up having to do mine every 4 weeks or so though as I'm blonde so my roots end up making me look like I'm balding Grin
