Do I need a slip/petticoat?

I bought in the sales a beautiful semi-full pink skirt which unfortunately is a bit sheer. The silhouette is gorgeous and it will be lovely and cool on holiday so I don’t want to wear something underneath that feels hot and constrictive (is that even a word?).

Amy ideas wise women of S&B? I’m too old to be showing my knickers to the world.

Yes you need a slip.

Many of us about these parts are big fans of a slip. They reduce cling and smooth things nicely.

Mmmmarks and Sspencer do a ‘cooling’ non-cling one, but I’ve got a good one from Matalan too.

I usually wear a full slip rather than a waist one, as it feels more comfy not to have a ‘second waistband’ under a skirt.

I adore a slip. The Marks cooling ones are great. I have a few in different lengths and colours and the body ones too. Dresses can hang a lot better with them. (As well as preserving modesty!)

Yes, you would solve this problem with a slip. I’ve got lots, from cotton to slippy silky material, different lengths and from pale peach, white and black. They are very useful.

Head to M&S, John Lewis or online via eBay can be good. you can get skirt slips or dress slips, personally I prefer the dress slips as they give a better line in my experience

M&S do a “cool comfort” slip range, this might be the best option. Or flesh coloured big knickers so not all that visible?

Depends on whether the skirt is just a bit thin or full see-through in the wrong light.

If you can just see the colour of your pants, nude chub-rub shorts (which will hide your knickers). If your whole legs are on display if you stand in front of a window, try something like this.

An unlined skirt will always look and hang better with a slip.

The M&S slips don't make you feel hot or restricted. With a long full skirt I'll wear when its hot, I like their culotte slips as it stops any thigh rub as well

I love a slip. So many skirts come without a lining now. If going to cinema or a meal sitting down for long periods without a slip when you get up the material is stuck to your legs. They always make clothes sit so much better. Also some skirts and dresses are so thin they need one.

I have the M&S slip @SoScarletItWas links. I’m glad it performs for other people, but it leaves me dripping in sweat. I have others in cotton jersey (Sunspel) that provide warmth and coverage but become rather heavy in heat. Really the best outcome I’ve found has been with very light silk - so my only options are to sell all my worldly possessions to buy one from somewhere like Araks, or to dive into pre-owned, which doesn’t seem attractive for underwear.

But yes, most modern (unlined) dresses and skirts are a million times improved with the right slip.

geoger · 31/08/2025 10:00

A slip always makes dresses and skirts hang better. No cling and smooth lines. I have some that are very pretty on top and don’t look like underwear at all so I just wear that, pop a skirt on with or without a cardigan and I’ve got a nice outfit

TheeNotoriousPIG · 31/08/2025 10:14

I was advised by an ex-dressmaker that skirts and dresses should always be worn with a slip as it makes it hang better. Enjoy perusing the wonderful world of slips, OP!

Culotte slips! What kind of sorcery is this? These sound life changing

Does a full slip feel too warm when the temperature is around 30? I’ve two warm weather holiday to take this year which this skirt would be loved for wearing in the evening.

I have a book full of household hints and tips mined from magazines of the ‘20’s and ‘30’s. One woman wrote her tip saying her daughter, instead of a slip, always wore silk pajama bottoms and everything always sat beautifully.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/09/2025 06:58

I have a slip from Amazon for my sheer skirts. It was cheap and does the job.

No and it will prevent the skirt sticking to you.

Team Slip here!

The M&S Cool Comfort ones are brilliant and I have several in different lengths and colours. Skirts and dresses hang better, I'm happier when I don't have a bare gap between skirt/top if I reach up, and don't find them hot/uncomfortable even on holiday.
