Can I wear this?

I've got two weddings to go to next year, both seperate groups of people so looking to perhaps spend a little more than i might usually do and get a dress that I can wear to both. They're both barn/tipi style venues in the summer.

I've got plenty of time to look but this dress has caught my eye https://www.karenmillen.com/blurred-floral-drama-woven-taffeta-maxi-dress/BKK26257.html

I'm early 40s, size 12, 5'7". I like that its a bit different but I think the cutout bits are making me worry its a bit young for me?

Blurred Floral Drama Woven Taffeta Maxi Dress | Karen Millen

This captivating Karen Millen maxi dress commands attention with its artistic blurred floral pattern and luxurious taffeta fabric that catches the light. The thoughtfully designed plunge neckline frames the décolletage with sophistication, while the...

That is gorgeous. Love it! Enjoy :))

MiddleAgedDread · 31/08/2025 08:54

I really like it apart from the cut out bits.

TATT2 · 31/08/2025 09:31

The cutouts make it unsuitable, for any age, at a wedding IMHO.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/08/2025 10:02

It’s fine if it fits you well especially at the cutouts (probably wouldn’t suit anyone with a bit of flab there or short waisted) and also if your skin there isn’t markedly less tanned than elsewhere.

bitterexwife · 31/08/2025 10:04

Love it

Sassybooklover · 31/08/2025 10:35

I think it's lovely, and I'm 50 and would wear it! As long as you're not going to get 'love handles' poke through the cut-outs, then I don't see any issues with the dress! You know your own body and it's shape.

JDM625 · 31/08/2025 10:40

I like it- except for the cut out bits. I'd worry about fat rolling out when sitting down and its not really suitable for a wedding.

Another thing to note is that its 100% polyester, so if you are in a tipi in the height of summer, it might be an incredibly hot, sweating dress 😬

Aroundthefirepit · 31/08/2025 10:42

Beautiful!!!

Newmeagain · 31/08/2025 15:36

It’s a lovely dress - love the colours. I also don’t think there is anything wrong with showing a bit of flesh at any age. BUT the positioning of those cutouts gives it more of a “beach party” vibe. I suspect that’s why this dress is on sale and available in all sizes.

Newmum110 · 31/08/2025 19:56

I absolutely love it OP, wish I had a wedding to attend as I would love an excuse to buy it!!!!!

I think it’s really nice and I’d wear it at 50 if I lost a few pounds.

I'd wear it if I lost a few stone ... 😁!!!

youneverwalkedinmyshoes · 01/09/2025 13:29

I'd wear it, its beautiful and if you love it, why not? I am 50 and just worn a cut out dress as a wedding guest last week. :)

mycatismyworld · 01/09/2025 19:43

I think you'll get a lot if wear out of this dress. I see it teamed with chunky sandals and a denim jacket or more dreey shoes and a dark bolero. Great choice OP

Travellingraspberry · 01/09/2025 19:50

Well it arrived and the 12 is too big! 😩 Debating whether to order the 10. I do love it, colours are beautiful and its different without being to out there but someone mentioned about the taffeta/polyester not being good if its a boiling hot summers day which has made me worry a bit. If it was a bit cheaper I'd snap it up (assuming the size 10 fits) as could get something else as back up.
Annoyingly the Karen Millen website says an extra 20% off all sale but when I try and add the code its says not valid on that dress!

I’d order it just to check. It’s absolutely beautiful and I think it would be fine for the sorts of weddings you describe. And I’ve worn that kind of fabric in the summer and unless it’s totally max roasting, I think you’d be fine. Chances are at least one of the events will be a sensible temperature, hopefully both.

I would not wear it for me because of the cutouts - I’m def too flabby for them. But if you’re ordering a size 10 it’ll be fine!

ihatethewordhubby · 02/09/2025 02:37

Please please wear the dress with the cut out bits. You will look back when you are old and want to shout "wear it ! "

Sidelined101 · 02/09/2025 02:53

Love it! Normally I open those links with trepidation but this is a pleasant surprise. If you’re worried about bulge when seated just pull the elastic waistband up a bit at the sides and let it down again afterwards. It’s beautiful and unusual. I’m five feet nothing otherwise I’d be tempted too

Seismicshift · 02/09/2025 08:29

Try the 10 and see how you feel! It is a beautiful dress. If side rolls are not a factor for you and you love it, then go for it!

indoorplantqueen · 02/09/2025 08:45

It’s a gorgeous dress. I have several that are a similar style and find them very flattering.

Please can you link to some, this is slightly out of my price range although I love it (thread hijack ahoy)

Picklelily99 · 02/09/2025 12:24

I absolutely LOVE the skirt part! The print, the fullness, fabulous! I care nowt for the top though - all that ruching! It even makes the model look chunky! HOWEVER, I'd still buy it, 'cos if push came to shove, I'd take it to a reputable seamstress and have the top removed, to make the most beautiful skirt that I could wear with a myriad of different tops - crisp white shirt, black camisole etc. Then you have the best of both, and for the price it's a steal!

ObtuseMoose · 02/09/2025 13:26

I think all the ruching on the top looks dreadful, really bulky and cheapens the rest of the dress. The cutouts are fine and the colours are gorgeous but the ruching was a weird choice.

I've ordered the 10 so if that fits I'll wear it as it is but that is a genius idea to have it altered in the future to just be a skirt!!

Tbf you could have it altered afterwards to make a top and a skirt to make it much more versatile

Travellingraspberry · 06/09/2025 16:29

Well the size 10 arrived and its too small! The size 12 was a good 3-4 inches too big and the size 10 at least an inch too small round the waist and the top was really tight...

Back to the drawing board. Dont suppose anyone has seen anything similar that's caught their eye in the sales? Really like the colours and print on this one. Dress isn't needed until next summer so I've plenty of time but was just hoping to get a bargain in the sales.
