Best tips for smooth feet and no hard skin on heel?

This might be TMI but I seem to have really thick skin on the edge of my heels! It is dry and uncomfortable - I have to file it off every few weeks but it comes back.

How do I stop it coming back?

Does everyone file their feet every few weeks?

Do any of the creams work?

Flexitol is great for dry skin / cracks, it’s the only thing he’d found to make much difference

Bichette · 27/08/2025 21:00

Gentle file every few days and cream every other night

Bichette · 27/08/2025 21:00

Yes to flexitol heel balm

I find Footmender better than Flexitol, but it is relatively expensive.
ETA a professional pedicure every 6 weeks has helped a lot too.

Have a pedicure. They will shave your feet 🐾 and get into the nooks and crannies.

I usd Urea heel balm and silicone heel socks a couple of times a week, after the gym, works a treat. I notice a decline when it's not done regularly.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/08/2025 21:04

Foot file and Flexitol overnight.

Wear cotton socks over the Flexitol.

You could try a pedicure. I recently went for my first, and was a bit alarmed when she came out with what looked like a cheese-grater, but it did the job so well that I almost asked if she would do it on the calluses on my hands!

Foot file and cream then socks most nights. Soak in bowl of soapy water once a week. When you have showers rather than baths hard skin builds up more.

I’m a bit obsessed with having smooth feet and in the past have visited a podiatrist to get rid of any hard skin. I recently bought a cheap electric foot file from Amazon and I love it! I use it once a week and it keeps on top of any hard skin. I also use foot cream every night.

vicks vapour rub

KayDog · 27/08/2025 21:52

Crisco

Scholl cracked heel balm. I don’t need to bother with files anymore as it does a better job than tools anyway. If you use a foot cream it should contain urea as this is the active ingredient.

caramac04 · 27/08/2025 22:33

Another vote for Footmender. Yes it’s pricey but I got it from Boots on a £10 Tuesday. I’d pay full price tbh as you only need a little so it’s good value. It has a pump so you don’t waste any.

Honestly I wouldn't bother with anything other than a podiatrist. Even the cheese grater pedicure isn't as effective. I had one last week and my heels still have hard skin. When I go to the podiatrist my heels are like a baby's. I go about once a year. It's so much better than a pedicure.

TheLeadbetterLife · 28/08/2025 00:46

I use a pumice stone on mine at least once a week in the bath, then apply moisturiser. If you keep on top of it the hard skin doesn't form.

buffy2025 · 28/08/2025 00:55

My routine might be a bit excessive but I have no hard or dry skin on my feet at all and painful cracks are the worst

weekly
microplane foot file before shower on dry feet
in shower use a body scrub on feet

daily
wash feet with soap in shower with a long handled brush
ccs foot cream before bed every night

ParadiseLaundry · 28/08/2025 07:18

Pumice every day and thickly coat your feet in urea foot cream when you get out of shower or bath (doesn't need to be expensive, the £1 one from Savers works well) then cover your feet in plastic bags and put thick socks over the top on an evening when you're sitting down for an hour or so. Do this 2-3 times a week.

Ballardz · 28/08/2025 07:23

I have thick skin on my feet but it isn’t dry or cracked, just thick. Drives me nuts but I use a cheese grater foot file regularly in between pedicures.

AlannaOfTrebond · 28/08/2025 11:32

I've just discovered Beauty Pie Footopia cream and it's better than all the medical style urea creams I've used in the past, plus it smells lovely and minty!
