My daughter has been really quite spotty since her teens, she's now early 20s.

I've bought her a few different so-called miracle face washes, but nothing seems to work.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Ive struggled with acne almost my entire adult life and im 40 now and only just got it under control. What sorted it for me was:

  1. Course of antibiotics from GP. Although I wasn't offered these until later in life because they always wanted to put me on contraception to cure my acne, which never worked. When my husband had a vasectomy they prescribed me antibiotics as I no longer needed contraception. Cleared my acne up within a few weeks but came back again later on.
  2. Prescription topical with skin and me. This is my current treatment and its been amazing. Would really recommend. Im probably going to need it for a long time because if I stop, the acne comes back but its worth the cost.

Has she been to her GP/seen a dermatologist?
Acne is often related to some sort of hormonal imbalance. I had it badly - it got much better when I was on the right sort of oral contraceptive (estrogen type). Later I was diagnosed with PCOS. Apart from that, there are various other prescription meds which can help.

And just my answer and the one above show one size doesn’t fit all on this!

Visit to the GP. Topical antibiotic like Erythromicin helped my hormonal cystic acne for a while. Stopped working so now been given benzoyl peroxide 5% with clindamycin 1% gel...tho it's harsh stuff and burns my skin/makes it itch like mad so I've had to give that up now too (annoying, as it actually worked!).

If she’s bothered by it then I would recommend GP.. they will start by putting her on antibiotic gel and/or an oestrogen based pill and then step it up from there with a referral to dermatologist for Roaccutane if it is severe and nothing else works.. Or if you can pay privately, you can book her straight in to see a dermatologist as that will be the quicker route . I had acne for decades and it was only roaccutane that really worked for me but everyone is different.

My dd 13 has acne and had it form 11. Gp prescribed epiduo. I will update thread in a few weeks to advise as it takes a few weeks to work. She's had it for 3 weeks now acne is still there so far but seems less red. Sometimes they can purge at this stage then improve. We have appointment with gp after 8 weeks to review. Gp said there's a pathway so will try something else if it doesn't work. I was worried they would pass it off as just hormones but it is quite upsetting for a teen to have bad acne. Gp was very understanding and kind to her. Tell your dd to go to the gp because they will help.

This is interesting as my dds previous hormone blood test came back with low progesterone. They have asked for a phone consultation after her test from last week so there must be something up with the latest one. I wonder if that's something to do with having acne as well then? (she was tested as she had an ED (in recovery now) to check if her periods are normal not because of her acne.)

GP. If it's persistent and bothering her, ime potions and lotions aren't going to get rid of it - something prescription strength would be more effective - whether that is topical or oral medication. Good luck.
(In my 40s and had acne since I was a teenager and tried practically everything!)

Pore Favour supplements (used to be Anti Acne Club) got rid of mine permanently. They offer your money back if no improvement after a couple of months so worth a try.

DD had very bad acne on her back. Only thing that worked was going on the pill - Yasmine.

TheOGCCL · 27/08/2025 09:12

I agree with going to the doctors. You can end up battling this for years with OTC stuff and it could be part of an underlying hormone condition like PCOS.

You can try spearmint tea, apparently it helps. And a good diet of course, and plenty of water.
In my observation people with acne tend to overcleanse their skin, especially with harsh cleansers that contains lots of chemicals. If I were her I would just cleanse with chamomile tea and use a mild moisturiser like one of those Simple products, twice a day. Strictly no make up and avoid sunning the face.
