Pretty dresses that can be worn after having children

Dear mums,

What clothing brands you use to buy pretty, casual but modest dresses?

I’m thinking no spaghetti straps, or décolletée cuts, or mini dresses.

No maxi dresses with deep above knee cuts that effectively make them mini dress in the wind.

Not baggy or shapeless, but somewhat pinched at the waist.

Many brands I see seem to cater teenage/young adult/ type.

Shirt dresses were not too bad, but many had buttons all the way down. Real buttons. Which can make wearing them “stressful”.

Any brands, most likely small or boutique, you know that makes beautiful casual dresses?

Also, at a risk of sounding too picky, the fabric shouldn’t bee too thin or stretchy…

I’d love to hear your suggestions!

thanks v much x

Any dress worn before babies can successfully be worn after, assuming they still actually fit.

Short, long, strappy, sleeveless, high cut/low cut and a million variations in-between.

If you're scrabbling around on the floor with toddlers, no dress is gonna do, but why the desperation to be 'modest'? It's very handmaids tale... And quite concerning that a new mum should feel she has to fit in with some sort of modest code?

Wear what you like op.

If you like shirt dresses but not the buttons, just get them sewn up from the hem to the waist and just leave the buttons at the top so you can get them on. Or swap buttons for a zip all the way up. A dressmaker would do this fairly cheaply if you don’t sew yourself

NRBY belted linen dresses have been some of my most worn, I’ve even dyed a couple. I wash on low spin and smooth them on the hanger, I only iron if they’ve been hanging in the wardrobe for a while.
They run large. Fabric and quality are great.
There are quite a few on Vinted if you don’t want to blow your budget on one.
ETA: I see the Chrissy dress I had in mind is now slightly over budget new but there are cotton dresses that fit the bill.

Why do you need to be more modest (terrible word) after having children? Genuine question..

sunshinechaser · 28/08/2025 11:59

Why do we need to dress differently when we have children? I’m not being rude-I really just don’t understand. I’ve always loved clothes and just wore the same pre children as after. I think I’ve only had an accidental spill on me once or twice and my DS is now 15! I would try and keep a sense of your own identity when you have children and wear the same sorts of dresses you wore before you were pregnant. Or maybe I’ve just misunderstood.

Wear the cycling short type things under dresses to avoid any flashing!

Scamp and dude could be what you are looking for?

Sassy31 · 28/08/2025 18:31

Scamp & dude are pretty decent & have pockets! . However size down as sizing is pretty generous

“Modest”.

What an awful phrase. It reminds me of the Handmaids Tale.

Agreed!

It makes women who wear the dresses OP doesn’t want to be be immodest 🙄
