Help with thin hair

piccolopuppy · 24/08/2025 02:02

I'm completely fed up with my hair. It is so thin, I have hardly any of it, and no matter what i try it just hangs limply. I think perimenopause is making it even worse.

I have a Dyson airwrap which can give me a bit of volume at the roots for a short time, but any attempt at curls/waves fall out within minutes.

I've tried what feels like millions of different products.

I am restricted with how I get it cut, as I don't have enough hair for layers.

I can't wear it down as it just hangs limply, and ponytails look ridiculous as they are so skinny. I've gotten pretty good at doing a messy bun, but would love to not have to constantly wear it like that.

I watch reels on SM for tips but the people who claim to have fine hair always have much more than me!

At this point I will try anything so hit me with any and all recommendations!

I'm watching with interest! I'm the same, I've just had my hair cut to bob length in the hope of thickening it up but menopause has made the texture really weird and it looks rubbish whatever I do. Someone on here recommended a Tigi thickening lotion which does give the illusion of thicker hair but I don't love the feel of it, it's in a pink round bottle with a yellow pump.

I wash my hair and put it in plaits until it’s dry (overnight) and this gives mine a bit of body when I take the plaits out. I’d love to be able to do a messy bun but I just get a tiny bobble when I try.

pontivex · 24/08/2025 02:31

Long pixie cut (and blonde highlights) saved my thin and very fine hair. Took years off me. Easy to maintain. Highlights also fatten the hair shaft making it look fuller.

Also R&Co Dallas Thickening spray

Thanks I'll give plaits a try. My hair is currently about shoulder length which I find is long enough to be able to pull the bits of the bun apart to make it look fuller than it is. But it's hard to do on freshly washed hair as it just slips everywhere.

Thanks, I don't think a pixie cut is going to work for me at this point but I'm glad it's working for you.

I do get my hair dyed which I know is supposed to help, but honestly I can never tell any difference.

My hair has become very thin over the past year (age, hypothyroid and weight loss). I used to have lovely thick hair but now it’s a disaster and I can never get it to look nice. So I took the plunge and bought a wig. It’s wonderful, I no longer have to spend ages trying to make my hair look decent. I just put it on and I’m ready to go. It’s a beautiful wig and I get compliments about how great my hair looks. Best decision ever.

Maddy70 · 24/08/2025 03:15

Rosemary oil is your friend. It stinks. But massage in thoughtly every shampoo.

Dustyblue · 24/08/2025 03:19

I'm the same. I've always had thin straight hair but menopause (I'm 50) has taken it's toll. In bright light you can see my scalp over my forehead.

My wonderful hairdresser cuts it into a bob, just below my jawline and does foils to give it the illusion of fullness. My hair is light brown with only the odd grey one, so she does blonde foils to cover that.

I'm sure there are hair-thickening products available but I've never tried them. Also, a decent hairdresser will blow-wave it with the round brushes, which helps a lot, but can't really be replicated at home.

I think I need to start investing in hats.

You need something with a bit of grip - my hair is horribly fine too and I use Bumble and Bumble dryspun spray after using an air wrap. I don’t try and lift the roots, my hair flops immediately and curls don’t hold either but making the ends look flicky gives a bit more volume, especially combined with the spray. Mousse before the airwrap helps too.

UnsocialMedia · 24/08/2025 04:22

VO5 hair powder and Bumble & Bumble thickening spray (in the blue can) both work well for root lift I find. You use them on dry hair.

JoeTheDrummer · 24/08/2025 09:08

I have a similar problem and use the Batiste Dry Shampoo called ‘Volume’ which someone on here recommended. It does make a real difference, I just squirt it into my roots & massage in.

CarlaLemarchant · 24/08/2025 12:37

Aveda thickening tonic is excellent for giving the appearance of thicker hair.

Lisanne55 · 24/08/2025 12:45

I have very thin hair. I find keeping it above shoulder length with no layers helps. I would definitely avoid trying to wear longer hair up. I also regularly change my parting as it tends to hang limply from my parting and my parting starts to look wider after a while. Covering any grey hairs - they seem to blend into my head somehow and make my hair look thinner - and blow drying upside to create volume.

Hiptothisjive · 24/08/2025 12:50

So I have a dear friend who has the same issues and has done PRP for hair loss. The difference is astounding. People also recommend Seaweed Shampoo - there is a Cornish company that does a good one. Good luck.

hellowembley · 24/08/2025 12:58

I have the same problem. Clip in hair extensions (for volume not length) have changed my life!

My mum swears by this Philip Kingsley range. She has been using it about 2 years and is rocking a fine head of hair. My aunt is using it too now.

Whilst looking for a link I see he does another one which might be worth a go as well.

A wig actually sounds amazing! But also a little bit scary somehow!

It’s fabulous. It’s a beautiful style and colour and doesn’t look at all ‘wiggy’. I had it for four months before I was brave enough to wear it but for the first time in ages I feel glam again. Now looking at which one I want next.
