Wrap dress for the beach...?

I'm looking for what seems to be impossible to find, based on my Googling so far...

I'd like a wrap dress made of quick-drying slightly stretchy fabric, a bit like this dressing gown

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09G389SR1?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2

The idea is to use it as a cover-up for the beach. But I want it to look like a dress, not a dressing gown! I like the idea of a simple wrap - easy on, easy off 😊

Darker colours are good because if you have a wet cozzie on, you can't see it through the fabric.

any ideas???

Have you tried just googling “beach wrap dress”? I looked and a variety of options came up, though maybe they’re not what you’re looking for? I did the same on Amazon and by scrolling through I found a few. Some are wrap around kaftans.
Depending how much you want to spend, One Hundred Stars do some beautiful wrap around dresses.

Yes, I Googled it to death last night and tried Amazon, eBay, Uniqlo, and just about any other retailers that came up in the feed ... but nothing quite fits the bill.

The One Hundred Stars kimonos (etc) are lovely, but not the sort of thing I'd wrap around a wet salty cozzie 🌞

I'm actually thinking I might just buy the dressing gown, and modify it into a dress by shortening the sleeves etc!

(Edited to add: Ah bollox - just saw the dressing gown is no longer available... I ordered one last year and it's great, so I don't want to cut it up!)

I got one last year from John Lewis. Navy with some colourful embroidery. I've been looking again as I would have like one in another colour but no luck.

It's perfect for chucking in for breakfast or lunch over my cossie.

Just tried to upload a pic but Mumsnet isn't allowing it. It's JL AND/OR brand.

UpToonGirl · 24/08/2025 09:47

Let's see if this works.

Wrap dress for the beach...?
Beachtastic · 24/08/2025 10:15

That looks nice, @UpToonGirl, but (a) isn't available now and (b) looks as though wet would show through? I'm looking for something with a bit of elastane in it... reason being, I have a black dress I can put on over a wet cozzie and walk around in/go to the shops in, without anyone noticing wet patches, because it's made of some kind of slightly stretchy polyester. But it's a ridiculous garment for the beach, it's more the sort of thing you'd wear to a party with high heels! 😬

This is on the M&S website. Any good?

It’s a Billabong Jet set Angel sleeved v neck midi beach dress in the M&S website in the sale. Mumsnet have the attached picture under review.

It's a bit like the "party dress" I currently wear! Except that mine has black lace on it too 😖

I've got my heart set on a wrap, literally like a dressing gown but a dress, so that it's super easy to get on and off.

So many clothes out there and I can't seem to find this!

Have you looked on the Roman clothing website? You might find what you’re looking for there.

They're all a bit showy. I just want something really simple.

In fact, I've come to realise that it doesn't exist, because in reality a "wrap dress" doesn't wrap, it goes over your head and just looks as though it wraps.

I think I'm just going to buy a bloody dressing gown somewhere and adapt it!

The other option I'm looking at is some of the hiking dresses at Mountain Warehouse, Decathlon etc... breathable quick-dry fabrics.

Gaaaaahhhhh!

It doesn't show through, unless you're sopping wet when you put it on. It's crinkly quick dry but not too thin for sitting down at a casual restaurant for lunch. They must have been popular as they sold out quick but they've not redone them for this year, I was thinking vinted or eBay. It's a proper wrap style as well.

I've done other similar searches myself and not really found anything. Either they are too beach/see through or more cottony which I expect would stick to any damp bikini areas. I'm on holiday now and had planned to have a look here for something but there are no clothes shops where I am. Off topic but slightly gutted as I love a good mooch on holiday!

Ha! So difficult isn't it... You should rejoice in your brilliant find, obviously rare as hen's teeth!

Enjoy your holiday 🌞

Some wrap dresses do wrap over with the attached tie going round, but you don't pull them together across you like a dressing gown and tie a belt over. A dressing gown will look like just that.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 24/08/2025 11:14

Have you searched for towel dress instead?

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 24/08/2025 11:16

Primark do these (in navy too) which don’t quite fit the bill , but very cute and the others look a bit well… towely. Grin But worth a look.

The more towely ones. You can find them a lot cheaper on ebay.

If you put wrapped swim coverup in the search bar of Vinted there are loads.

@LadybugsAndSunshine Thank you for all the links!

That pretty kimono is nice, but too fancy - defo looks like something for the bedroom 😉

I don't want towelling, I want a fine jersey with some spandex in it that dries quickly.

I've gone down some rabbitholes now and am beginning to realise how many absolute horrors are out there!!!!!!!!! 😬
