Sulphate-free shampoo for itchy scalp?

All normal shampoos give me an itchy scalp, even the 'sulphate free' ones that I've tried in fact contain some kind of sulphate so they too give me an itchy scalp.

The only one that works for me (no itchy scalp) is one that's specially formulated but it's very expensive (about £27 per bottle). So I'm trying to find something 'off the shelf' that's cheaper.

Does anyone else suffer with a sulphate-induded itchy scalp and, if so, which shampoo alleviates this condition for you?

Not sure if the ingredients, but would an organic shampoo bar be an option?

I use Moogoo. It's a bit expensive but lasts forever.

We use OGX brand.

JKRismyPatronus · 17/08/2025 17:08

I use Moogoo too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've not tried any of those suggested but I'll look them up. :-)

Second vote for OGX - coconut ones are lush.

Hask is also good.

It might not just be the surfactants, it could also be the fragrance. Linalool and limonene are known allergens/irritants.

I’ve had to resort to buying a sulfate free, fragrance free shampoo base and adding my own allergen free fragrance or pay £££ for shampoo

I had a similar thread and was recommended Moogoo and it has been brilliant. My scalp has been much improved.

Head and shoulders for itchy scalp is brilliant.

That's a very good point - what sulfate free, fragrance free shampoo base do you use? I don't need any fragrance at all.

Another vote for OGX 🙂

I used to use Head & Shoulders a lot, but a few years ago that just stopped working and, if anything, made my itch worse.

It’s from The Soapery, really reasonable price.

Head and shoulders is full of quite strong chemicals that causes a chain reaction, which means it clears the initial itch, but damages the scalp in the process, which then causes more itch and the cycle continues. Using a gentler lower chemical shampoo helps the scalp to recover and stops the itch at the scalp. (Many many years of experimenting with different shampoos have taught me this).

I had constant scalp irritation because of allergies. I now use aleppo soap. which is used as an all over cleaner in the middle east. It is made with olive oil laurel oil and laurel ash . It probable dates back to the Romans. Use like a shampoo bar. It lasts for ages and is very environmentally friendly.
