Does anyone use the Whering app for putting together outfit ideas?

I like the idea of it, but I'm a bit worried that I might spend hours and hours on it!

On the other hand, I can see that after the initial pain of putting it together, it would be easy to add any new item bought, and could be great when shopping to stop impulse buys that don't go with anything you already have.

No
and never will
any weren’t you meant to be decluttering?!

Thingamebobwotsit · 17/08/2025 06:58

I tried it for a bit. To be honest, I found it a faff, and it suggested outfits I would have worn anyway. The colour match was a bit odd too.

My personal view was that to get it functioning well, and to keep it functioning well, took too much time and effort and it was much quicker just to spend the time up front planning, by rummaging through my wardrobe.

Oh no I've been searched!!

I have been doing ok on that ACTUALLY 😉 but now I'm trying to find my oomph in terms of style and looking like I meant to wear what I leave the house in, rather than looking like I'm wearing whar happened to be clean!

I used to be so passionate about clothes (not fashion or trends, but fashion history, making clothes etc) but with crap stuff and meno-body, I'm trying to find ways to kind of re-educate myself!

That's what I suspect. It would be the perfect way to spend half a day avoiding other things that need doing! Plus I'm a total perfectionist who gets too bogged down in detail, so I could see myself being obsessed for a week then being pissed off at all the things I hadn't done snd abandoning it.

I'd rather not bother if that's the likely outcome.

I started using it but was mid winter and I was never home with my clothes and good lighting to take pictures. Might give it another go.

I really like it and use it on a weekly (and sometimes daily basis). I found it supported the up front planning and wardrobe rummaging by allowing me to record outfits which really work to refer to later. IIt’s also incredibly handy to form ‘lookbooks’ - eg I have ones for specific trips and holidays, seasonal ones for work / weekends etc. It can also generate packing lists for the trips. My clothes on holiday have definitely been more successful as preplanned in outfits and packing lists generated.

If I feel like wearing a particular garment, I can look to see the outfits I have incorporated it into. If I introduce something new I can easily plan outfits that it will work with.

It also assists decluttering for me as I am keen to keep my overall item count (significantly lower than the reported national average of wardrobe pieces) down. It also allows me to see the full potential of my clothes when I see the number of outfits I can form with a (relatively) small number of pieces.

A very useful tool imo. I really enjoy playing around with it and found the cataloguing process interesting and not too onerous.

You are saying exactly what my oldest mate would say and you are probably right.

I like it. It helps me shop my wardrobe as things aren't as easily forgotten, and it's helped me target exactly what was missing to make some other clothes work, so it reduces over-buying. It got me out of a style rut where I had got into the habit of just wearing the same old outfits. It's also helped me get rid of things I just couldn't make work, as you see them in your selection and can't ignore them as easily.

The biggest bonus is that I can plan my outfits sat on the sofa watching TV, or in bed, rather than that hideous and weirdly anxiety inducing stand in front of the wardrobe and see what feels right palaver that I despise.

The initial time investment to set it up has payed off in the long run for me, and I feel more stylish too.

ToriTheStoryteller · 17/08/2025 20:13

That's intetesting to hear. I do think it could be useful in the long run, especially for making it clear where there are items that have nothing to pair up with, and also to give me new ideas.

But then the initial time needed seems like a lot!

I've been using Whering for a couple of years & absolutely love it. I initially downloaded it to help reduce the number of copycat buys. My kids pointed out that I buy the same types of clothes every year.
My wardrobe is crammed to the gunnels ( antique & not wholly practical ) & I forget or can't find what I've got. I also wanted to reduce my cost per wear of items to under £5. I look at the stats every day & sometimes that reminds me to wear something I've forgotten about that's at the back of my wardrobe. I utilise the lookbooks & log my daily outfits, take screenshots for the inspiration pages & use the holiday packing list. I archive my winter wardrobe in summer & likewise in winter.

Yes, the initial loading of pictures is a faff. I try & use the retailers pictures, so the images look better. But it's easy to download new items as you go along.
All in all it's probably the most useful app I have & almost perfect in it's functionality. Plus it appeals to my original love of playing with those paper dress up Dolly's, not so much Clueless.

PaquitaSalas · 18/08/2025 18:26

@CantonetI can completely relate to the nostalgia around playing with cut out paper dolls and their outfits ! Smile

Thanks @Cantonet that's really useful to hear 🙂

I'm bumping this slightly old thread to ask if anyone has used the Whering app to generate outfits or to ask others to style outfits for you and how that's working out please? It's refusing to suggest outfits for me for some reason but that's the thing I actually do need help with and is the reason I downloaded it!

Cantonet · 01/12/2025 13:13

I'm not sure why the outfit generator isn't working for you. I've just checked mine & it's fine.
You need to click on the purple crown at the bottom right. Then click on dress me at the top left.
The lower RHS toadstool if pressed suggests outfits.
Mines not on a public setting as I don't really use it like that. It's more to catalogue my wardrobe & aim to wear all my clothes frequently enough so they're down to less than £5 a wear.
