How do you wash delicate items?

Particularly things like nice underwear & silk pillowcases?

I try to hand wash with special detergent (Clothes Dr silk/delicates wash) but after a while the colour of the items fades and the items aren’t as soft as they were when new.

I just bought a blue lingerie set, soaked them in the sink with cold water and the detergent, set them to dry…and the set now looks grey! 🙁

I wash them inside a clean pillowcase in the washing machine on the delicates cycle. If it dies I wasn’t meant to keep them. I just can’t be doing with delicate things that need washing at 2am on a blue moon and don’t look at them whilst they’re drying.

Oh and just to clarify I have some very expensive lingerie but I just stick it in the washing machine. Sometimes with no washing powder. The first time you wash something the dye can run a bit but not to the point of changing colour so I’d probably speak to customer services and try and get a replacement

Silk underwear I wash in the shower with me with soap (I once read French women do this and it makes it so easy) or inside a silk pillowcase on a delicate cycle.

I tend to use the smaller stones, at the edge of the river, to pummel my delicates on.

In a net washing bag in the machine on a delicates cycle or the wool/hand wash cycle depending on fabric.

By hand, warm water, with soap and hair conditioner.

In lukewarm water with pure soap flakes that have been melted in boiling water before adding them to the cold water in the sink. Wash. Rinse twice. Wrap in a towel to remove excess moisture then hang on the pulley. Same deal for silks and cashmere and good wool (jumpers etc I dry flat on a towel rather than hang).

from bitter experience: wash lights first then darks. Rinse lights before darks. And if you spin on the machine (you’re better not to), do the lights and darks separately.
