Hair tie advise please

I currently have nits from my kids…. For the forth time this year 😬😬😬

so I need to either cut off all our hair til this stage passes or start tie-ing it up more.

I have 2 issues with ponytails that I’m hoping I can get your advice on.

firstly I have a weirdly small head so with my hair back it makes it look quite disproportioned with the rest of me. Any styles anyone can think of that would look better. Or any advice on how best to do a looser style.

secondly I find most hair bobbles wrapped around twice is too loose and comes out in 15 mins. And wrapped three times is too tight and gives me a headache.

I feel stupid asking because I’m early forties and surely I should have figured this out by now but please help me wise ones!

This might look a bit twee, but two plaits then pinned into a bun of sorts at the nape of your neck? Or a loose-around-the-head French braid with the tail pinned up? This would solve the too loose /too tight problem of hair elastic size, although they do come in a variety of sizes. Maybe an Alice band, sort of scrunched forward to give your hair a bit more volume, and a bun in back. Fellow small head here...
Edited to add so sorry about the nits!

Could you try this kind of thing with a claw clip? (Photo coming)

That's very nice, but if nits are the issue,I think you need something a bit tighter..
plaits or a bun.
Get rid of the nits, then use something like Repel daily.
Also, if you have nits for the 4th time this year, is it possible you didn't get rid of all the nits on all of you? You need to do all of you at the same time, either condition and comb, daily until they seem to have gone, or nit killer lotion, then every 3 days for a few weeks to catch any stragglers. You also need to wash pillowcases, cushions etc as hot as you can.
I think in your case I might be covering sofas with easily washable sheets.

Yes I think the first time it was def me reinfecting the kids as it’s too hard to comb myself thoroughly. But now I know I need to use chemicals on myself but combing works better for the kids. I do know who they came from this time and I thought an early warning would be enough to nip it in the bud but it seems not so I want to go belts and braces. And have an effective up-do plan for when we see them next!

I think as you’ve said plaits are they way forward!
