How to style dresses in autumn/winter

Confuzzleduzzled · 15/08/2025 19:55

Having never been a dress fan, I’ve discovered that these shirt dresses look great on me. So far I’ve only worn them in warm weather. How could I style them for autumn and winter? I can’t work out what would go on top and what length boots to wear.
Thanks

Is that from H&M? Fab dress x No idea how to style it though sorry 🤣

Fab question as I’m crap at styling dresses too! Love a H&M shirt dress

I love dresses in winter, have quite a few shirt dresses.
Not sure how to do it stylishly TBH but I think most length boots will work, I either go for calf length or Doc Martin style, or even chunky brogues.
Then its lots of layering with thick tights, sometimes a top underneath and a chunky cardie on top.
I think I find it easier to wear dresses in winter then summer!

I think it depends on the dress fabric personally.

A thin cotton doesn’t really work with thick tights or chunky boots IMO, it feels like the balance is off.

I’d wear that dress in early autumn with ankle boots maybe but not tights unless there were a light denier/colour.

I'd add a roll neck underneath, with tights and boots. Go with whatever length boots look right, ankle or knee.
Or, I'd add a waistcoat/vest over the top.
Or, a nice jumper.
A denim jacket or biker might work.

I wouldn't add a cardigan as on me they look frumpy.

Trinny wood all on Instagram does lots of layering.

A lightweight trench would look good with this, as long as the trench is longer than the dress. Boots I can't picture what would look best but I think it always depends on your shape as well, so whichever you think looks best.

Wear with tights, with shoes or boots, long sleeved top or poloneck underneath. Cardigans, jumpers always good - the right shape depends on you.

Are you a matching colours person or not?

Confuzzleduzzled · 16/08/2025 13:20

Thanks for all the suggestions.

@Loujab yes it is H&M.

@silverspringer I think it’s viscose, so it is thin and cotton like.

@Seaside3 cardigans look grumpy on me too. I’m thinking a short, loose jumper might work.

@verycloakanddaggers Yeah i think I am a matching colours person. Never really thought about it before but I’m not confident with lots of different colours.

I like this style of jumper, but a cool biloxy one would work too.

Looking at hm there are some nice looking cardigans, that look less frumpy this year, so maybe this is the year to give them a go again.

FloraBotticelli · 16/08/2025 13:44

Long brown leather boots would look great, as long as the dress fabric is heavy enough for autumn. You could add a vest knit on top

Start there then, you can get a top in a similar colour.

It's equally fine to be matching or not, just easiest to start knowing which because it saves time looking!

Tank top over the top or a roll neck underneath - I usually go for knee high boots or ankle boots/brogues with thick matching tights with skirts this length. Works well into autumn. A brown suede jacket over the top would extend the wear as well.

I'm not sure if you're asking about dresses in general or just this specific one.

I wear dresses all year round but for winter I choose heavier fabrics like linen or a lined/double layer cotton. To wear dresses through winter, layering is the answer. But it can very much depend on your style. I'm arty/witchy/goth so I tend to wear layers and boots all year and just add thick cotton tights, big shawls and wraps for winter.

The dress you show is a bit lightweight but you could make it work for winter by layering. I wear mostly plain or checked but, for example, you could layer this over a long sleeved top, a pair of trousers tucked into long boots and add a cardi or gilet. You could also layer it over a plain dress or skirt in a toning colour. If it's button through you can then unbutton partway at the bottom and add a broad belt so it's almost a duster coat.

This might not be helpful if arty is not your style, but nevertheless, the key to wearing dresses in winter is going to be layering.
