London clothes...

Hi everyone,

I'm going to London tomorrow for a long weekend. As the temperature is set to be scorching, I'm not really sure what to wear. I have quite a lot of staples in my wardrobe, but I've been consciously trying to move away from midi dress and trainers.

I do have a long linen skirt (beige, h+m) which I haven't worn yet. Could that be suitable? What should I pair it with if so?

Thank you in advance 😊

Unless you're going anywhere fancy, I would wear your coolest, most comfortable clothes. London is mostly v casual, but you will see people in all kinds of everything

A linen skirt sounds fine. Wear with a cotton t shirt and your most comfy trainers. Have fun!

I live in London and as above anything goes and less is more. Wear what makes you comfortable and that you can walk in. The tube (deeper lines) will be very hot so be prepared for that if you are using it.
Have fun!

Yes, I echo the posters above, wear whatever you like. There’s no special dress code in London unless you’re going to a particular event. Wear whatever you’d normally wear on a hot day to keep cool. You literally see every possible style in London, from super casual / scruffy to smart and from weird to wonderful. Take a mini battery operated fan for the tube!

TheOGCCL · 13/08/2025 08:53

Shorts and sandals? (unless doing something very special eg The Ritz).

AtomicBlondeRose · 13/08/2025 08:56

I was there a couple of weeks ago keeping an eye on what people were wearing. Loads of long skirts, always with trainers. I was wearing sandals so was looking out for those and saw very very few! Everyone wears trainers. Boxy t-shirt and/or loose linen shirt on top.

HollyGolightly4 · 13/08/2025 09:00

Okay this is very reassuring. I just want to try and look a little bit stylish but not overheat!

No Ritz planned, just a few usual sight seeing excursions, west end show etc

Btw I don’t wear trainers when it’s hot - but pp is right, trainers are completely ubiquitous, in an average tube carriage there’s maybe one person not in trainers. I also like sandals because they are usually smarter than trainers for going day to night.

I’m a Londoner and in hot weather I wear shorts, t shirt and crocs. Take a handheld fan with you. If you keep popping in and out of air conditioned places you should be fine.

AmoungUs · 14/08/2025 09:53

So what outfit did you go for? You are lucky with the weather, it’s warm but not roasting like Tuesday.
have fun 😎

Twilightstarbright · 14/08/2025 10:23

I’m a Londoner and I see loads of sandals! Midi dresses too. But honestly absolutely anything goes as long as it’s not offensive.

OuterSpaceCadet · 14/08/2025 11:07

That's the joy of London. You literally can't dress wrongly because there are representatives of every style tribe, culture and none living here.

I think sometimes people take that as a killjoy response but I'd interpret it as: if you have something you love, that you're really excited about wearing, just wear it! Or if you hate the pressure, just wear what you're comfortable in! Sure, London leans far more casual than many other places, but it's also not judgemental and you won't stand out either way.

However the heat is too much. Especially in parts with no trees. The heat gets trapped and often doesn't go down much in the night.

ChangingWeight · 14/08/2025 11:12

No one is going to look that stylish during a heatwave in London. The infrastructure isn’t set up for it. Expect the tube to feel illegally hot, you’ll be wanting people to just get away from you as opposed to dazzling them with your outfit!

Personally I would order new clothes only if you feel like you’re lacking warm weather clothes generally. I’d probably go for things like
co ords, shorter skirts and playsuits etc but you don’t have to.

Preciousssssss · 14/08/2025 11:34

Yesterday the dressing was divided between women in shorts (from knicker length to below knees) and t shirts, and others in tiered, printed or block coloured midi dresses. The flouncily dressed did look a bit hot and bothered.

I was at an opening night at the theatre and in the cheap seats there was only one noticeably dressed up woman - shadowed by a sheepish man (date?) in extremely ordinary clothes.

mugglewump · 14/08/2025 11:39

Londoner here, not at work. I am wearing jorts, t-shirt and fisherman's sandals.
Jorts are very popular and better in a city than short shorts.

MorrisZapp · 14/08/2025 12:07

I'm from Edinburgh and was in Exmouth Market last week. Anything goes but the biggest style change I noticed was block colour, almost always black or cream, where once there were prints. If you own anything at all in solid black, that's a big tick. I saw loads of fisherman and birkenstock style sandals, how anyone wears trainers in the heat is beyond me! Loads of young women in solid black loose trousers. The only 'pattern' that seemed popular was a thin black stripe on a white or cream jumper. Yes, jumper. I don't make the rules 🤣

Comefromaway · 14/08/2025 12:26

I'm also off to London tomorrow for the weekend.

I shall probably be wearing linen shorts and a top with a nice belt for my posh shopping day or possibly a uniqglo ribbed bra dress and maybe linen trousers and a t shirt for my mooching around/theatre matinee day. If it was cooler weather I'd be wearing jeans and a t shirt with trainers but as it is hot I will probably go for sandals or comfy ballet flats.

HollyGolightly4 · 15/08/2025 09:47

I went for linen trousers and a cardigan for the train, have brought with me a h+m slip skirt with a variety of tops and a short A-line dress! I also chucked in a pair of comfy shorts and baggy t-shirt and have worn my trainers - I think I'm happy overall 🤣.

Enjoy! I am wearing a fitted T-shirt and a long cotton skirt and will be getting the tube later. Anything goes!
