Facial spf for acne

My son has been prescribed a topical ointment and antibiotics for acne. He's been told to use an spf. A lot of them are quite greasy so I'm just wondering what a good one would be for a teenager with acne.

Also, any great acne cures you've come across. I'm not keen on 3 months of antibiotics and she said ro -accutane is the next step.

La roche posay is good. So here is my routine that I follow with that:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
la roche posay spf
Evening:
la roche posay moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

Thanks for umber. Do you wash face in evening? Do you wash face in shower or separately?

Thanks @Contrarymary30. We will hopefully get the roaccutane but who knows how long it'll be since not even referred yet.

Assuming he's been prescribed antibiotics plus epiduo, he should have been told he'll need a good moisturiser. My teen uses Cerave, with spf in the moisturiser - as well as a Cerave face wash.

We're on month 5 and it has helped hugely. Not completely clear, but the side effects of antibiotics plus retinoid are far less severe that roaccutane. We were told ideally 6 months of this combination before a referral to dermatology.

When I was on roaccutane the dermatologist recommended Cetaphil SPF and also their moisturiser.

Normal spf can make me break out but not the cetaphil.

I used to have acne and still have oily skin in my late 30s. The SPF I use every day is L'Oréal Revitalift Anti UV fluid SPF 50. It is really lightweight and doesn't leave my skin greasy..... I use it as my day cream.

Also check out Sparkleandskin on Instagram. She had acne and a lot of content on products that help and how she improved her skin.

I noticed you said he had protein powder when he got home and immediately broke out. Is the protein powder made from whey? This is the part of milk products that can trigger acne in individuals who are prone to it. A vegan protein powder and maybe a trial of no dairy might be good.

I got acne at 13 and still require occasional prescription treatment at 48. ☹️ Over the years I have tried everything, and I mean everything to avoid having to take more tablets, but it had zero effect.
The only thing that has worked properly to clear my skin is either oral antibiotics or Roaccutane. I'm one of the few who has required a few courses of Roaccutane over the years, as my acne has come back approx 5 years after each course.
My point is, good clean living etc may help, but if it's bastard resistant f**k you acne, you probably need prescription tablets to really sort it. I wish I gone on antibiotics earlier when I was a teenager, would have saved lots of angst and money!
I hope the antibiotics work well for your son. 🙂
I've found a neutrogena oil free moisturiser with spf effective- usually available on amazon.

Thank you for this. No, he was not told about moisturiser but started using his sister's cerave one. The epiduo was ripping his face off. He uses it every other day now. He uses the silver thing from 47 skin and that seems to work better than epiduo. Some days the spots are so bad, really red, and he has skin like mine where every spot creates a scar (no idea why our skin is like this). It just started at Easter but he's already very scarred.

Will look into the protein and milk too but there's so many variables.

Are you talking about prescription tablets or ointments like retinol etc?

RavenT · 08/09/2025 09:56

@umbermoose prescription tablets. Have tried topical medications, never been effective for me.

roshi42 · 08/09/2025 13:58

I’d highly recommend Paula’s Choice. They have a teen range. They helped clear my acne in my 20s and taught me a lot about the ingredients. And the importance of SPF!

roshi42 · 08/09/2025 14:02

Also, just to say - roaccutaine worked really well for me - which is fortunate because I couldn’t take it for long as it did make me really worryingly depressed, which isn’t/wasn't normal for me and I didn’t think much of a risk - I pretty much just dismissed the idea. So do keep a close eye on him as he takes it.

But paulas choice doesn't have high range spf right?

All their ranges have an SPF moisturiser… some 30, some 50. The one I often still use is 50 (Resist).
