Some thoughts about elastic waists

It was a welcome variation after almost 2 decades of skinny fit dominance.

Trouble is, there's no variation from the v v v high waists now, so in a similar vein, we still have little choice. I wasn't a skinny trouser/jeans fan, so the relaxed styles were a godsend, but it is the waist heights that puzzle me.

Worst of all, for me, is how it has taken over pyjama bottoms. I prefer how they used to sit, straight legs with flat mid high waistbands that just didn't pull on the skin. Now they are all super high rise with scratchy exposed elastic, so bunch up around me with tons of waist fabric when I sit down.

And they seem to have taken over everything, growing higher by the year. Now I can't find a sensible middle (what used to be high!) rise anywhere apart from young teen stores, and as someone who used to buy a lot of stuff from Toast, I can't get past the inordinately massive wide legs on everything and enormous elastic waistbands that sit like a rolled up carpet against my ribs. They don't even sell anything tapered anymore.

What do others think? Is it going too far? A high waist used to look neat and decent, but they have really gone nuts now.
I do believe the stores are stuffed full of elastic waists to minimise customer returns. Also probably connected to higher BMI's and are easier/cheaper to manufacture, without having to worry about shaping or higher standards of tailoring.

Most of these offerings are in the £145 mark, and if you go higher, it seems to get worse - consider brands like Oska for instance, over £200/300 for a drawstring sack. Even if there are nice shapes and fabrics, the 'duffle bag' style waists look cheap.

If they don't want to put buttons on things (it's a fair enough idea) then why not create more flat, elastic waistbands that streamline the belly and hip area without the dreadful pull string bunching?

Thank you for listening to my grump Grin

We all have to find clothes that look good on us. That might not be your style but for some of us it might be. Just look elsewhere.

Teajenny7 · 08/08/2025 18:33

I am 5ft1, untoned with a hour glass shape.
The pull tie waists is awful on me loads of material round the belly and crutch.
I have found sewing up or removing the pockets make it look better.
I am now looking for trousers that have no pockets or pockets like jeans.

I loathe elastic waists. No matter how expensive the garment an elastic waist always ensures it doesn’t hang properly. I think manufacturers use them as a cost/skill cutting exercise as they can’t be bothered to shape correctly or include darts.

BIossomtoes · 08/08/2025 19:14

I think their popularity is because as a population we’re obese. The manufacturers are responding to demand.

Chokkii · 10/08/2025 01:38

Definitely do think it is the higher BMI.

I tend to live in dresses anyway, but l avoid elastic waists, for me they don’t feel as if they fit properly. On waists generally, if they get much higher l won’t need the top.

Re. the weight comments, I don't quite follow the logic.
If people are larger as a population now than say 30/40 year ago, why do we need elasticated waists and not just larger made clothes?

Because fixed waists are uncomfortable if you’re overweight. Sadly I speak from experience at various points in my life!

Fair enough, I wanted to make sure it wasn't just another snide way to bash fat people and let big companies off the hook for their cost-cutting ways.

Because they cost more to make and encourage less returns?

So probably a lot to do with the rise ofonline shopping rather than the size people are?

Floisme · 10/08/2025 15:29

I agree that online shopping helps retailers get away with a lot of things that we wouldn't have put up with when trying on before buying was the norm.

Anyway I thought of this thread today because I'm wearing an old pair of Toast tailored trousers that have tabs for adjusting the waist. They're so useful if your weight fluctuates or you suffer from occasional bloating. I wonder how often Toast do them now?

thedevilinablackdress · 10/08/2025 16:10

I was wearing one of my favourite pairs of trousers yesterday which have exactly that feature @Floisme They're army surplus, sort of lightweight dress combats.

Probably both. When my weight was in the right zone I wouldn’t have entertained an elastic waist. Now it’s suboptimal I can’t wear anything else - and I’m far from being the biggest woman I know.
