Opinions on vegan leather / pleather jackets

Looking for your thoughts on / experiences of buying/ wearing pleather versus leather jackets. I am currently torn between an expensive chocolate brown leather jacket (by product of food industry) and a much cheaper pleather burgundy one.

Both are nice colours/ designs. What’s holding me back on the burgundy one is the sense that it’s ’not real’ or cheating in some way. Happy to listen to anyone who thinks I am being ridiculous. Am in my fifties and generally subscribe to the view that I look better in better quality items and can’t get away with cheaper things so much nowadays.

Do you rate vegan leather jackets? They do seem to have vastly improved in quality and design these days. Or would you always go for the real deal?

I dont rate them. I find pleather sticky, sweaty & plasticky. The exception is some Stella Mcartney stuff as she uses natural materials (funghi apparently). But obviously very pricey.

I bought my first leather jacket aged 49 & my first suede jacket aged 51 & wear them lots. I love them.

Unless it’s due to beliefs or budget, I can’t get on board with pleather anything. I’d rather wear a cloth tote bag than a plastic-y pleather one, likewise a jacket. The rebrand to “vegan leather” has not sold it to me!

My leather jacket is a Whistles one which was (for me) criminally expensive, bought with a 20% off code a few years back, and I LOVE it. Cost per wear is pennies now, and I dithered over it for ages before finally pulling the plug because of the price. No regrets though!

I’d rather not wear anything that resembles a leather jacket if it has to be plastic.

Mine was All Saints. I looked at one 12 years ago & dh wanted to buy it but I wouldn’t as I thought it to expensive.

I now have one & wear it SO much.

I was once persuaded into giving my OH €300 towards a real leather jacket. It was awful and made him look like a gangster.
My mother bought a very similar jacket in Australia, which was equally awful.
I do not like leather jackets - my personal opinion.
However, a good friend had the most beautiful, dark green suede jacket, which looked really amazing and suited him to a tee.

This is mine. I think it was £379 when I bought it, and then I had a discount code, so cheaper than now but still an investment. I love it. All Saints do fab leather too, my friend has one from there which she was similarly conflicted about re the big spend, but looks great.

I’m going to be the voice of dissent (compared to most other posters so far).

I’m usually obsessed by quality and buying the best you can afford and looking after it. Quite frankly I am a horrible snob when it comes to clothes/shoes/accessories.

BUT I bought a fake leather biker jacket from ASOS Designs (quite a few years ago) just because I loved the colour (bright green) and it cost £10 in the sale. I was expecting it to be bloody awful and I’d probably have to bin it. OMG it was fantastic! So many people complimented me on it, including complete strangers, and everyone thought it was real leather. 😳I wore it a lot (and it still stayed looking great) and eventually gave it to the manager at my Spitalfields optician as she’d complimented me on it so many times (and I lost weight so it was a bit too big for me).

99% of the time I always go for the real deal, and the only exception I make is for vegan leather from Nanushka as the quality is amazing (looks and feels like the softest most expensive genuine leather)….apart from that ASOS jacket. It fooled everyone (and this was the City/Canary Wharf where people have lots of £££ and know what quality looks like).

I'm happy to wear either.
I have a light colour M&S suedette jacket which is lovely looking & washable. Plus some pleather shirts in tan & black bought in the sales. They look good & are easy to maintain. I'm not keen on the thicker pleather jackets as they're often plasticy looking.
But real leather/suede jackets need a spray on protector before being worn. Plus the enormous cost of dry cleaning can be an issue. On the other hand real leather jackets last for years. My children wear my old ones & say the marks add character.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 06/08/2025 14:51

I had a faux leather biker jacket, had it for about a year then it started wearing out and you could see it wasn't leather.

I now have real leather, no going back, the more I wear them the better they look. Same with handbags, real leather as faux leather just wears out and ends up looking tatty.

I have faux leather skirts for ease of washing, but they take forever to dry! I used to have some suede skirts, but dry cleaning them was a pain.

Wendywooooo · 06/08/2025 15:05

I avoid pleather in most cases, Particularly shoes and bags. If I wanted a coat with that look i'd certainly be looking at the leather options and saving up if required.

Only thing I have which is "leather look" is a pair of wide leg pants. But given how much use they've had a good pair of leather trousers wouldn't be a bad investment either

Chewbecca · 06/08/2025 15:22

I've got a pleather jacket that I bought simply because I loved the colour and it fitted me so well (unusual!).

I am not very keen on the pleather material, I find it sweaty and feel oddly trapped in it, can really feel that it is not breathable. If I could find the same shape and colour in real leather, I would be extremely happy.

Britpopbaby · 06/08/2025 15:28

If I had to choose I would go for leather. Look on Vinted as I have seen a fair few All Saints jackets on there really cheap.

TerminalMoraine · 06/08/2025 18:18

Pleather or fake leather jackets don’t last very long. Eventually the surface layer will peel off. I would never buy another one.

henlake7 · 07/08/2025 02:21

yup, I agree with everybody else. Pleather can look and feel as good as real leather but it tends to wear out and peel quite quickly. Real leather ages much better.
Although Im ethically againest buying real leather but I will wear it if its something I thrifted.
