vintage costume jewellery

Hi,

I have just inherited a whole big box of vintage costume jewellery from my DM (she is still alive but is very happily ensconsed in a nice nursing home).

I don't really have any use for it and out house is small, so I can't easily store it either.

I wondered if you might know if there is a sensible place to sell things like this? I'm not sure if an auction house would be best, or vinted or ebay or somewhere like that?

If it's really not worth anything I might stick it all in the attic, but I worry that it will just get damp and be spoiled anyway.

It's mostly broaches and necklaces. Things that are quite fine looking and nice, but not real gemstones, just pretend ones.

Thanks!

I'd start by looking to see if there are any brand names engraved on any of the items. Then you can have a look on eBay. Also your local library will be able to order you books on vintage jewellery and what items are worth. I got interested in it a few years ago but didn't pursue it for long.

I don't think there are any brand names tbh. I think it's all just pretty things.

I’d start with a proper valuation, don’t just put it on Vinted, you’ll get peanuts for quite valuable bits. There are mobile valuation/ auction houses, that travel around the country, offering free valuations, if you don’t have any local to you.
The alternative is to choose a few of your favourite pieces and get them remade into something you like and would wear.

Thank you very much @Reallyneedsaholiday that is really helpful. I have written to someone who does that.

Hey! I can have a look and give you a rough idea if you want to PM me some pics.

Definitely get it valued, I’ve seen costume jewellery sell for good prices on various tv auction shows. Sometimes it doesn’t have a makers mark but the style and materials used link the pieces to certain designers, styles and eras

Thank you very much, I have sent off photos to an auction house called Hansons.

Agree with using an auction house. They will advise if it's worth auctioning and whether you should set a minimum price. You should then find a buyer willing to pay what it's worth.
Costume jewellery sells for good prices at auction.
