EBay v Vinted

I am always surprised, whenever buying second hand is mentioned on the board, the go to usually seems to be Vinted. I always buy from ebay, I have tried Vinted but the clothes look old and crumpled in comparison! I also find it harder to navigate. Am I missing a trick, is there an easy way to find the better stuff on Vinted or is ebay generally more reliable?

Following as I also find it really hard to find stuff on vinted

I find Vinted very expensive. For instance there’s a certain bag for sale which is going for the same price as the new one which is still readily available. Yet the risk of fakes is much higher. Are people delusional or am I missing something?

I bought a “new with labels” bag there which was just pristine; yet she had the same ad listed a week later. As the value is low for fakes, I can only imagine stolen.

I find more genuine second hand on eBay.

I'm in the EU, so have a wider pool to buy from. I find Vinted really easy and the quality has always been good.

I haven’t bought or looked at eBay for any clothing in a year, I think. I do spend a lot of time browsing Vinted, and though I am fussy about if they’ve taken enough pics of the whole item/condition, etc. I also won’t pass on a great item just because they’ve pulled it out of the bottom drawer without ironing. I think eBay listings had better standards as there was so much protection for buyers, whereas on Vinted it seems a lot more carboot sale than high street thrift shop!

I used eBay for years both buying and selling, mainly selling decent high street brand and Boden. It got increasingly fiddly and expensive to sell on there and then I couldn’t sell anything and no one was even looking at what I listed. I’ve found Vinted simple to navigate and an item is cheaper on Vinted than the identical item is on eBay. That means I’ve had to accept a lot less for the bits and pieces I sell on Vinted.

What I don’t like about Vinted is the time it takes people to send things and it is definitely more hit and miss with less requirement to describe things properly. Searching for items is tricky because the search facility isn’t that refined and they definitely need more categories for describing the condition of items. Sellers list things and then forget about them so I always check when an item was listed and when the seller was last looking at their account. Private eBay sellers have to be more on the ball. I imagine Vinted is a minefield for fakes too. I still use eBay for all sorts of other items such as fabric and craft supplies. What kind of items are you looking for @NewMauveSwan?

SJM1988 · 05/08/2025 10:16

I use both. Vinted to me is easier to use but you have to be more careful with what you purchase. Ebay I find there is alot of businesses creeping into what I am searching for.

NewMauveSwan · 05/08/2025 11:02

(I’m sorry, I don’t know how to answer individual questions, maybe my tech knowledge is the Vinted problem!)
I get ideas from the style board and as I can’t afford the new prices, head for ebay, where I can usually find a nice item, the site is so easy to filter and the items just seem more cared for with good photos.
I always see Vinted mentioned on here so have tried a few times but it leaves me bewildered, if I can manage to find what I am looking for, there seems to be hardly any information such as measurements. Is Vinted generally cheaper but not so good?

I use both and find Vinted cheaper but eBay more reliable.

What I hate about Vinted is that they have 5 business days to send the item so that’s a week, then something like Yodel can take a week to deliver. You only have 48 hours to accept an order or it is automatically done for you.

It’s too short a time frame given it’s impossible to predict when it will arrive. I’ve had one item arrive smashed into a million pieces and another what was absolutely not as described but because I was away for a weekend I missed the deadline by hours .

AzurePanda · 05/08/2025 11:09

And yes, for some reason Vinted people almost never supply measurements. Something else that’s happened to me a few times is that items arrive that have been shortened or altered in other ways.

I've always used E bay for selling. I don't buy clothing. The look of items on Vinted puts me off and think that people expect very cheap prices.

ThirdStorm · 05/08/2025 11:28

It's Vinted every time for me now for clothes. I find the more saved searches I have for specific items and better the "suggested for you" is. I'm always finding really great things. I find ebay very expensive now.
