Skincare advice for 50 plus - haven't really bothered before so not a clue!

At the age of 51 I have finally decided it is time to start looking after my skin. Apart from occasional foundation with SPF and daily facewash in the shower,
with moisturiser about one a week when I remember, I don't really do anything. I am pretty low maintenance!! However I would like to start trying a little now but there are so many options I don't know where to start!

I don't want anything that takes too long, as I know I just won't do it. Ages ago my flatmate gave me some Decleor oil which I quite liked but I don't know if this is actually any good? (This was about 30 years ago).

Don't want to spend a fortune but could afford something decent if it works. My skin gets greasy around my nose/glasses but otherwise no issues eg not dry or flaky.

Suggestions please! Thank you

PS I also like Lumene for a treat and had their Advent Calendar a couple of years ago.

Do not use you spf cream at night. That way lies blocked poors. Buy a different night cream or serum for night.

I refuse to spend a fortune on skincare or make it too complicated. My regime is;
Simple micellar water to cleanse.
Cerave eye cream
Cerave serum
Elf face cream spf 30

Simple and good

OP, I totally get the feeling of wanting to keep it simple, especially when you don't yet know what you're doing or what your skin needs!

The only recommendation I would make is that if using SPF is a key aim for you, then you might want to consider using one independently of your moisturiser. The trouble with moisturisers with built in SPF is that you'd likely need to apply a ridiculous amount to ensure full efficacy (i.e. to actually get that SPF 20 protection on your face). Using a dedicated SPF means you can apply the appropriate amount (typical recommendation is three fingers' worth) and then moisturiser on top if needed.

Personally, my skin is quite oily so I never use a moisturiser on top of my SPF as I find I don't need it. So it's not that you absolutely must use a moisturiser on top - the SPF is key, IMO. If you find a hydrating SPF you could eliminate the morning face cream and have a separate night cream (without SPF) and still keep your routine simple. A decent high-street SPF is La Roche Posay, which has both factor 30 and factor 50 variants, as well as tinted versions if you'd like a little extra colour.

Clinique have a lovely range of hydrating products, face creams and spf creams. Not greasy, fragrance free and won't break the bank.

If you’re using acid pads (or a Vit C serum, or retinol) make sure you use a moisturiser with SPF or ideally sun screen during the day - skin that’s been treated with any acids is more vulnerable to sun damage.

I’ve got the Dr Gross ones, I presume I just moisturise after using the pad? Sorry to hijack OP and thank you

I'm not an S&B skincare maven, but the general advice is to make sure you have a decent SPF either in your daycream, or ideally a separate sunscreen if you've used an acid toner, because you've basically taken the top layer of skin cells off, and so the newly exposed skin is more fragile. You definitely need to moisturise afterwards, just make sure whatever you're using has got a decent SPF in it.

I prefer to keep anything like that for night time, but have to use sun protection year round anyway, as I've got peely wally sensitive skin at the best of times.

Cleanse, moisturise and use sunscreen! Buy for combination skin if thats what you have by the sound of it. That's all it boils down to. Personally I cleanse at night and don't bother in the morning as my skin just gets blotchy.

Don't go mad with expensive brands.

Other than buying some Ordinary exfoliating treatment at about £6, I'd wait for Holland and Barretts advent calendar to come out - it's honestly amazing value and kinder to our bodies and the environment. Last year it was £35 for 25 items.

I still havemt used all the product in last years calendar and you get tools too like face cleansing clothes, brushes, tweezers etc.

I also lack interest in skin care. La Roche possay factor 50 face suncream (comes in a rectangular box) is amazing, it is so light and easy to put on. Doesn’t give me spots or any kind of sticky feeling. I highly recommend it!
