Please help me find some work clothes..

I’m 55 and a busty (38gg!) sized 16. I used to be an hour glass but now my stomach just looks pregnant (which I’m obviously too old to be).

I need a new wardrobe for a job I have in a more corporate environment. I’ve only ever worked places where I could wear jeans, or at least not massively smart.

I’m 5’3”, so sadly short and dumpy.

All help very gratefully accepted!

I should add that I’m blonde with blue eyes, but a rather ruddy complexion and double chin (dieting going very slowly)

Cos might be your obvious first resource:

Cos

Most things go to a 16. Everything looks smart and contemporary and their prices are good.

For style inspiration you could take a look at:

Studio Nicholson

You don’t give a budget? They still have a sale going on. Ostensibly their sizes only go to 14 but their cutting is very generous so if you have a tape measure to hand you might find a few things that work.

I’m the same height as you and don’t generally have to think about my height when buying clothes. But it’s obviously a good idea to have an alterations service to hand, so anything that needs it can be tailored to fit better.

I'd go with smart trousers, shirts and jackets to start with, in a capsule style wardrobe. So stick with the same colours, patterns etc so they can all mix and match. If you find that dull, add accessories. Im not mad for pattern or accessories as I feel they add too much visual clutter to me (I have enough of my own, without adding more.😁)

I'm similar in shape to you, and i gave up trying to look thinner, but focused on looking "put together' and I think that helps. Makes you feel more confident.

Im away at the moment, but I'm documenting what I wear by taking a picture in the mirror most days. It's actually helpful to see what works. Current faves are these blue trousers from Sainsbury's. Size 16 short. They would work with a shirt for the office, ans came in different colours too.

I really don’t think those trousers would be the most impressive office wear?

What is your budget OP? If you have the money I'd look at Pleats Please - lovely draped pieces that are cool in warm weather and look great on everyone I've seen.

Thanks all. Initially I don’t have much of a budget - maybe max £100 for a pair of trousers (but better if cheaper).

I'm really struggling with tops. My large chest means most tops don’t fit properly. Does anyone know where i can get properly fit shirts?

What is your budget?

Do try Cos, I like a lot of the things there but I do find that as a short-arse everything is to long and oversized on the shoulders.

I personally like Hobbs but it is a bit ore expensive. However, if yu try sizes in store there are Vinted bargains to be had. I also like Uniqglo trousers. Yuo have to try lots of styles to find the ones that have enough material to be flattering over the tummy area. I then usually wear a blouse over it or a boxy t shirt and blazer. Look for things with some drape over the tummy area.

I’d consider some shapewear not necessarily Spanx as it’s a bit sweaty. I’ve got some elasticated cotton blend bodysuits from Amazon and they give a much smoother silhouette, I feel much more together wearing one under a dress or pair of linen trousers.

@Costaproblemo for shirts, you buy the size to fit your largest measurement, (maybe that’s an 18, or larger?) then take them to your local alterations service / seamstress / tailor to be tailored to the rest of you.

It’s a waste of time trying to find a perfect fit within mass produced High St clothing.

perfect, thanks all. I went into town but couldn’t find much that fitted and/ or looked good. Will need to order in I think.
