How to dress to hide my pidgeon toes?

pidgeontoes · 31/07/2025 12:06

I seem to have reached my 60s without working out how to dress to avoid drawing attention to my pidgeon toed stance. I have been aware of it all my life but the current shorter trousers are comical on me!
To provide a fuller picture, I am 5 ft 9, size 14 with the standard belly of a woman my age. I am really looking for casual but stylish pub and restaurant type wear.
Thank you for looking.

Possibly I’m misunderstanding - but if you don’t think you look good in shorter trousers why not just wear other things?

(I’m also in my 60s, and have spent the summer so far in skirts and dresses. I’m about to order some shorts. For a while it seemed as if no one in my city was wearing cropped trousers; now the students have gone home that’s less true, but they still seem not quite now. And long trousers seem a waste of Vit D potential during our limited weeks of sunshine.)

What sort of casual are you thinking of - Knightsbridge, or Kingsbridge?

pidgeontoes · 31/07/2025 13:12

More Harrogate or York!

I dont really go out much and I feel out of place so I tend to try to look like everyone else so that I dont stand out. I have big (long and wide) feet and I cant wear heels so I look clumsy and clunky in dresses and skirts too.
I guess I am looking for ideas for outfits with long trousers that look stylish but not too noticable. 🤔

But no one has been wearing heels with dresses for a decade! (Except maybe in Mayfair clubs.) Dresses with flats is normal clothes.

Seriously, @pidgeontoes - have you been going about with your eyes closed? You seem to be imagining fashions that don’t exist. And the problem with putting effort into ‘looking like everyone else’ is that it leaves no room for feeling like yourself.

Loosely skimming above ankle length dress. Fisherman sandals. Done.

Justine Tabak dresses

Grenson sandals

Obviously doesn’t have to be these exact things.

I'm 5'10" and size 14, mid 60s and wear Levi's 501 90s and ribcage style which are a bit looser fit. They look fairly smart in a darker colour. I also wear Fatface cords and jeans, Seasalt Crackington trousers. Seasalt dresses, Josef Seibel fisherman style sandals.

I am sorry to have caused you so much frustration. My huge, inward pointing feet look rubbish and I lack confidence in social situations. I was looking for some confidence boosting advice. There is no need to be harsh.

Thank you for the links - I do like the jade Kensington dress.

This is where bootcut trousers / jeans / maxi dresses come in and which I live in. I have disproportionately big feet so the flare or hem hide them a little and take attention away from them. Mary Jane type shoes are very flattering with skirts or dresses (and obviously you can wear trainers too - I wear black ones with arch support and they make my feet look slightly smaller as well as give me support). I feel very relaxed in what I wear and that gives me confidence.

You’re lucky to have the height and slimness to pull any style off so these would look great on you

You can get intoeing sorted out with pretty simple surgery and physio. We generally do kids with this when they are around 10.

solando · 31/07/2025 19:09

What size shoes are you, my feet are biggish at size 41 and slightly wide but look in proportion to my size.

pidgeontoes · 31/07/2025 19:30

Mine are 8.5 and I need wide shoes due to bunions and flipper shaped feet.
