Chucked out 20th C make up … now what?

I last wore make up in the previous century.

I’m now 60 and have decided to give nature a hand … but how?

What would you recommend for a natural low key look, easy to apply, which smooths out sun damage and perks up my deep set blue eyes?

im lost looking at videos - surely I don’t need ALL that stuff? Is Laura Geller any good?

I just want to look my best self - the days of inner beauty/can’t be arsed/who cares, seem to belong in the past (also I may have met a man, cough)

Go into a make up counter and ask them to do your make up, and give you some advice but honestly I think make up makes people look older.

insomniaclife · 29/07/2025 09:26

not quite the answer I was hoping for in the S&B thread.
Anyone else? Five must have makeup items? Best brands? Is it worth spending £££ or will Revlon deliver for me?
Have couple eyelashes extensions at edge of eye as lashes are shorter now? Bit of lip filler to offset aging lips? Argh …

I really like Merit beauty. They do an essentials kit with basics and I found the foundation stick easy to use. I think it’s called the Five Minute Morning set.

I tried posting a link but it didn’t seem to work.

SparrowFeet · 29/07/2025 09:33

Erborian CC cream as a base
Perhaps have a lash tint and lift if your lashes aren't too short - it will make them look thicker and open your eyes up even with no make up.
Go for a cream blush - I use one by beauty pie but heard good things about Jones Road for more mature skin than mine (I'm 42). Have heard it can feel greasy though looks lovely on the skin.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 29/07/2025 09:36

I’m 60 and wear a light touch everyday
I like revolution
Their formulations are almost identical to brands like Charlotte Tilbury( my neighbour works in a lab formulating cosmetics
she also rates Aldi
i use Revolution double ended eye pencil
Loreal nudista CC cream
Revolution blush, also a nice one called doll 10
i do splash out on lipstick for better pigmentation and longevity
My favourites are Dior lip glow. Clarins jolie rouge( satin) Matte colours look too flat on me.
The pink/ black honey by Clinique are good
Elf is also a very good and reasonable brand
i use Clinique moisture surge skin care when I can afford it, Cetaphil when I can’t
I hope this helps

uncomfortablydumb60 · 29/07/2025 09:38

I don’t use mascara as my prescription eye drops cause lash fall, but Max factor are always highly rated

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 29/07/2025 09:41

I'd go to a department store and have a higher end brand aimed at a more natural look do your makeup (not MAC, basically) and take it from there. They can show you technique and recommend products, and the cost will be taken off anything you buy.

itbemay1 · 29/07/2025 09:44

My no make up routine - Good concealer - Laura geller is fab. Powder - Charlotte tilbury is great. A tubing mascara to prevent flakes - elf. NARS orgasm across the cheeks. A brush of the brows and a lip balm.

AllAboutTheWrinkles · 29/07/2025 09:44

I’m mid 60s and use a lot of Trinny London these days. I love her CC cream, plus two pots of eye2eye in whatever colours you like. Charlotte Tilbury cream blusher in a stick as I don’t like the Trinny colours. Maybelline sky high mascara, benefit brow pencil. Whatever I like in lipstick - I have a brownish nude for day time and a couple of stronger colours for night. Eyebrows waxed every 6-8 weeks. Good luck with the new relationship too!

GoldDuster · 29/07/2025 09:44

I'd go for a lash lift and tint, think about definition and shape for your eyebrows and already you're off to a good start.

I'd skip any kind of foundation and pack in the moisture instead with skincare, a cream blusher, and a decent under eye concealer if you feel you've got dark circles.

This is easy to smudge on, sticks around really well, and looks gorgeous with blue eyes.

I'm 65 and a reformed make up junkie. I've also retired so no pressure to look done as much. My make up bag is now- elf putty concealer, their brow mascara thing, Trinny tinted moisturiser (bit i don't like the smell so eborian next Time) Laura Geller Baked and brighten compact, Nars orgasm blush or a MUA pink one. Clinique purple mascara (but I have a maybelline purple one in stock) Black Honey almost lipstick. A trinny eyeshadow and a lilacy blue one i got in.a beauty box. I'd get advice on skincare, look at serums to counter sundamage. If I had the cash I'd tint my lashes, have brows shaped and tinted and invest in serious skincare. Less is more.

NewsdeskJC · 29/07/2025 10:03

I use laura geller. Looks fab. Doesn't cake.

Iheartmysmart · 29/07/2025 10:03

After years of quite heavy makeup I now only use Erborian CC cream, a bit of concealer if needed, NARS orgasm blush stick, Laura Mercier translucent powder, a bit of MAC omega eyeshadow, a brown NYX eyeliner on upper lid only, Charlotte Tilbury mascara and NARS Fast Lane lip balm. This gives me a subtle look which suits me far more at 58 than my previous style.

insomniaclife · 29/07/2025 10:26

Oh wow that’s the stuff I was needing! Loads to research and implement. Bloody love S&B Flowers

What are your eyebrows like? Microblading is fantastic and makes you look great even without makeup up. I think a good job would be worth investing in.

Useless comment. If it makes people look older, it's because it's badly chosen and/or badly applied.

gingercat02 · 29/07/2025 18:57

I'm mid 50s and not a big makeup wearer.
No7 tinted moisturiser
Maybelline Big lash mascara
My favourite lippy is Revlon Kiss me coral
And either a bit of bronzer or lip and cheek tint

kskajwnhxnqn · 29/07/2025 19:01

Hourglass do absolutely beautiful powders. Dim light is my absolute favourite one. I use them alone and over makeup. They make skin look luminous.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/07/2025 19:34

I’m 56. Trinny London CC cream, Maybeline purple mascara (or green) and a touch of eyes shadow to hide creases - then mainly ELF stuff, a highlighter I blob on my eyes mid lid, an eyebrow shaper and a lip oil.

Always minimum coverage - I think too much ages a person

Keepthecat · 29/07/2025 19:44

Keep it simple! I'm 69 and use Nivea tinted day cream in Light, have a lash lift every so often, Sephora brow mascara and sometimes Benefit mascara or Revolution tube mascara. Lips either just Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream or Clinique Black Honey, which suits practically everyone.
The Nivea day cream at £3.75 far outperforms a £40 Clarins BB cream, which sits in my pores and wrinkles!
Strivectin make an expensive little bottle of stuff that temporarily tightens up the pouches under my eyes - good for special occasions. Keep hairs on top lip and/or chin under control - I wax them myself.
It's just basically trying to make the best of what nature has given you. Nothing too dramatic. Good luck with your new man! Have fun!

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 29/07/2025 19:46

Get the basics right. Get your brows shaped and tinted. Worth considering subtle lash extensions as well.
I use a fair bit of Beauty Pie when it comes to make up but I realise a subscription-based investment might not be for you if you starting with a few basics.
I love Clinique for tinted moisturiser and I love Jones Road cream blusher. I love the Chanel cream bronzer, it’s expensive, but it lasts for ages.
Laura Mercier powder is fabulous - you don’t need a lot, forget the chalky formulations of yesteryear.
Trinny for cream eye colours.
I love Charlotte Tilbury’s chunkier eyeliners as I am rubbish at putting them on. Have a Victoria Beckham one I was treated to for my birthday which I love.
For lips I tend to stay away from lipsticks and for glosses or oils. The Dior ones are lovely for a treat.
One thing I had to unlearn was applying my make-up exactly the same way I did when I was younger. The Smokey eye I once used to love is not a good look on me now! I’ve also stopped using lipliner.
That sounds like a lot but I used to buy so much stuff. I don’t now and the bits I have last so long!
Oh and Studio 10 range is fantastic - designed for women over 50. I was lucky enough to try the full range and it’s fab!

GameOfJones · 29/07/2025 19:52

My light touch makeup routine (e.g most days) is:

Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter as a base on my skin to give me a bit of a glow.

Laura Geller powder over the top. I really like the kabuki brush they sell too for applying it.

Max Factor Miracle Pure cream blush. You need a tiny amount, I literally put the smallest dot on each cheek and use my fingers to apply so it lasts forever.

No7 hydraluminous tinted lip balm.

L'Oréal Paradise waterproof mascara.

If you want an eyeshadow I have the Bobbi Brown cream shadow stick linked above and it's really good. The Elf no budge shadow sticks are also great.

Five must-have items IMO (as a former beauty blogger, cited in Psychologies Magazine, invited to LOTS of launches and sent loads of freebies etc over the years...) :

Skincare aside (a whole other topic)...

  • Primer (keeps the makeup from sliding off)
  • Mineral foundation (light and buildable, with inbuilt SPF, and functions as a concealer, foundation and powder in one. Because it's buildable, you get as much coverage as you need/want. I recommend BareMinerals as a brand)
  • A multi-use product for blush and lips (again, a buildable tint is good, e.g. Benetint by Benefit)
  • A matte eyeshadow palette (e.g. Urban Decay do good ones, as do Mac)
  • A decent mascara (Lancome or Benefit do good ones, though lower-end brands such as Maybelline have really upped their game in recent years)

If your eyebrows are exceptionally light or sparse you may want a brow gel (e.g. Benefit's Gimme Brow).

I definitely think it's worth spending money on the base (primer and mineral foundation) - the rest is more negotiable.

Would not go with any of the extra stuff e.g. lash extensions or filler. Waste of time at any age.
