And does your capsule wardrobe see you through a whole year of 4 seasons of British climate?

I don't even get time to put things away daily or weekly, let alone 3 monthly 😂

Well, I suppose, if you did manage to get started, it would be easier because you'd only have 33 things to deal with.
Not that I've ever managed it!

Toomuchstufff · 29/07/2025 12:16

I sort of do this for my sort of day to day outfits I guess as I go through seasonal phases but I also couldn’t live without my random boxes of “summer clothes” and “winter knits” etc which I raid when I’m bored of my basics or when I go to an event or festival or wedding or whatever. Some of the stuff in those boxes goes back to the 90s!

also agree with poster above who says hard to put away!

How do people do this?
I don't think I could pick 25 things.

Me neither. I love the concept of a capsule wardrobe, but know it’ll be something I’ll never actually achieve.

measureofmydreams · 30/07/2025 06:23

I've not catered for high Summer here, but the items that I'd say get worn at least 6 months of the year.

Then some items could be replaced for summer. I could go on forever and this is still a bit imbalanced and flawed. It's based on what i get most wear out of .....here goes.

Camel coat from hobbs
hooded raincoat / mac (dark olive) Joules years ago.
brown suede jacket (autograph M&S)
black jacket/blazer (oversized)
black cashmere knit v neck and oversized
navy cashere knit v neck and oversized
white tshirt boxy (cos)
black tshirt boxy (cos)
blue and white stripped shirt (WNU) boyfriend
white shirt (WNU) boyfriend
1 pair of casual jeans (I like old style Gap boyfriend, can only get from ebay)
pair of dark denim wide leg jeans from Mos Mosh - make my legs go on forever
long black satin skirt from Zara (£25.99 one of the best I've found)
long black tube dress (eleven loves)
dark green cord shirt dress (cos)
long silver pleated skirt (hush)
black tulle skirt (hush)
black lace trimmed cami (M&S)
black wide legged trousers (Reiss)
black silk shirt (M&S)
knee length black boots - jigsaw
lace up black boot - lanx
sand suede studded birks
silver ballet flats
green adidas camper trainers

Daffodilsarefading · 30/07/2025 10:44

Not going to lie, I’m not a capsule wardrobe type of person.
I would find it difficult to stick to 25 items, especially as the weather is so changeable here.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2025 11:02

Maybe it’s easier/more useful to think 25 solid basics to which other things can be added (eg an event dress/ gym wear / raincoat)?

ducksinarow123 · 30/07/2025 12:54

1 pair of blue jeans
2 pairs wide leg trousers
1 pair linen trousers
2 pairs linen shorts
1 long skirt
10 various short sleeve t shirts (plain colours, Bretons etc)
3 light weight knitted jumpers
5 cardigans (mix of chunky and lightweight)

thats 25 and would do me year round. But doesn’t include shoes (flip flops, toms, uggs), or gym gear, or a formal outfit for the twice a year I may dress up (my Christmas Day outfit and my wedding/christening/funeral dress)

That is a good way of looking at it.

But then, does that just open up the gateway to having any limitless number of 'other things'?

I pretty much have been compiling a capsule wardrobe over the past couple of years

  1. Beige trench coat
  2. Black Puffa coat
  3. White t shirt
  4. Black Vest top
  5. White shirt
  6. Coloured shirt
  7. Coloured vest top
  8. Black/navy tailored trousers
  9. Black jeans
  10. Beige shorts
  11. Black mini skirt
  12. Black cardigan
  13. Cream jumper
  14. Coloured ribbed jumper
  15. Coloured long sleeved fitted top
  16. Floaty summer dress (to dress up or down)
  17. Ribbed short sleeved or sleeveless dress
  18. Leather jacket
  19. Black loafers
  20. White trainers
  21. Black ankle boots
  22. Ballet flats
  23. Dressy top (I have a lovely All Saints one)
  24. White floaty skirt
  25. Blazer

Ideally I would like to add the following:

  1. Wool coat
  2. Suede jacket
  3. White vest top 29 Casual/logo t shirt
  4. Heels/sling backs
  5. Knee length boots 32 Cream/beige cardigan

Well, it depends if you want to set the rule and then potentially fail, or try a version of the rule whilst maintaining free will! Grin

itispersonal · 30/07/2025 14:07

No idea I have at least 25 vest tops, 25 t shirts and tops, 25 dresses!!!!! Plus jumpers, tops, cardigans, trousers

henlake7 · 30/07/2025 15:34

yup, not for me.
A couple of weeks ago I decided I desperately needed a mustard yellow plaid winter coat I saw on Vinted, to match the mustard yellow Converse I had just bought ....its decisions like this (and the subsequent dopamine hits) that lead me to believe I will never be a minimalist!😆

The 333 method allows you to have 33 items, plus work uniform/sportswear/underwear. You're supposed to include jewelry apart from a wedding ring in the 33 items though. And shoes!

PaquitaSalas · 30/07/2025 18:42

cotton chore jacket
leather jacket
trench
wool coat
rain coat

light blue wide leg jeans (slightly cropped)
dark blue straight jeans
black wide leg trousers
2 x shirtdress

white shirt
stripe shirt
3x blouses

white tank
short sleeve t shirt
long sleeve breton
navy knit
black fine knit cardigan

suede trainers
Mary Jane
chunky ankle boots
saltwater boardwalk sandals
heeled esska sandals

But I would really struggle. If accessories like bags, scarves etc included 60 would be a more realistic capsule for me I think. Decluttering right now so thinking about this has been a useful exercise

DelphiniumBlue · 05/08/2025 16:38

The thing is, a capsule wardrobe doesn’t take account of all the items not being perfect all the time.
Say a white shirt or T-shirt is one of your items. That needs to be washed after every wear, and personally, I doubt I’d get even one full day without something being spilled on it, or brushed up against it, or stained with sun cream .
Then there’s the items that don’t quite work as you’d hoped- slight shrinkage meaning that top is either too short or not completely even a round the hem. The moth that got your perfect cashmere jumper, the unexpected change of weather, a new activity or invite for which none of your current items will do. The boots which turned out to be uncomfortable although they were just right in the shop, and you only found out after wearing them oust now they can’t be returned..Your favourite shoe breaking then you’ve got nothing to wear with half your wardrobe. I need spares of my main items, or at least alternatives. And then if you factor in size changes, mood swings, ankles suddenly getting puffy or a whole heap of other possibilities, I can’t really see how a capsule wardrobe would work for me. Although I did put up a list earlier 😁

GameOfJones · 05/08/2025 19:53

Oh, I agree @DelphiniumBlue that a capsule wardrobe is unachievable and impractical for the vast majority of people. But I still like reading about them and thinking about what would be in mine. For me, it's part of a move I'm making towards having fewer items of clothing in general but that I love and all make me feel good. I must have 20 different jumpers but only wear perhaps 4 or 5 of them regularly because they look good, are easy to care for, aren't itchy wool etc. So I'm slowly getting rid of all of the items of clothing that take up space in my wardrobe and don't make me feel great. I'm not going to get to 25 items in total but I think it's worthwhile trying to drastically cut down.

Well yes,the reading any and thinking about it is very enjoyable.
The thing is, everything in my wardrobe is something that I liked when I bought it. All my clothes are in colours that suit me, that I thought looked good at the time, and most of them had a specific purpose in mind, an event or series of events , or an item that I imagined would bE the piece that pulled it all together.
I was thinking recently, at the time of purchase or even a week or two later, I can’t tell which items are going to be my wardrobe heroes. It’s not always the ones I think it’s going to be. It’s only after a season or so that I can look back and think that I will be happy to wear that for the next 5 years. Case in point: my black Birkenstock Chelsea boots have beaten my DM boots this year every time there’s a choice between them, but last year the DMs won.
I make a list every time I come back from holiday of what I actually wore, what was surplus, and what I wished I’d had with me, and that is really useful when packing.
If I did a version of that for non-holiday times, maybe a pattern would reveal itself!

So yours would be seasonal then I guess. Unless you live somewhere it is summer all year round.
