Nails splitting lengthways?

Trickedbyadoughnut · 28/07/2025 11:28

After a bit of overuse of nail varnish and remover (a couple of different colours a week for a few months, oops), the condition of my nails has plummeted and virtually all of them have split lengthwise, so like a split between the top layer and the.

I have stopped nail varnish and cut them as short as possible, but what else can I do? It seems from searching online that it's partly that they're very dry so any suggestion for moisturising products?

Sorry to hear you have the same problem - mine have split quite far down so I suspect it's going to take ages to get on top of! Hopefully we'll get some good advice here

A nutritional solution might be a better bet than moisturiser (for which you might as well use vaseline as anything else, nails are dead cells). When my nails and hair were in bad shape my B12 was on the low side. I took a supplement and ate a lot of liver until they recovered. Vitamin D is good too - my nails grow like gangbusters in the Summer. Take cod liver oil and get some sunshine.

It has taken me over a year to get my nails in a good condition after having BIAB
What worked for me was having manicures without having polish on. Oil applied every time you wash your hands and handcream if possible.
Hot oil soaks once a week and I also take Biotin tablets
My nails are in a good condition at the moment and will have nail polish on again for short periods.

My index and middlefinger nails had this. Biotin and BIAB have saved them. The BIAB at my salon is filed off, I would stay far away from acteone, it caused me so many problems while I was getting gel.

Leaving them bare did not help, the split happened every time they reached a certain length, the BIAB is not cheap but for me worth it.

Find a salon that does IBX treatments. It's like a strengthening treatment that is cured like a gel, it bonds the layers of your nail together and is honestly miraculous. I harp on about it all the time and have rescued my own nails with it more than once. They should pay me commission for how often I recommend it.

Also buy a cuticle oil pen, keep it on your desk if you work at one or somewhere it'll be constantly to hand, and apply it multiple times a day.

OPI repair mode sorted mine out. Not cheap but cheaper than BIAB. Use it as directed, twice a day for a week, then once a day. I still use it as a base coat under polish.

I find a clear nail polish helps. As they grow past your fingertips, apply over the edge and underneath the nail until they are healthy again.

Using soap, water and a nail brush to clean underneath can help create that gap.

Leaving them bare more helps.

Thanks to all, lots to look into.
