Is it possible to go grey gracefully?

I've been dying my hair for nearly 20 years and frankly I'm bored with the hassle. To start with I was colouring my hair for a change and went through pretty much every shade going... more recently I have been sticking to my natural colour to cover the grey. My roots are coming through but they aren't that obvious as the colour isn't so different, but there is a fair amount of grey especially in the crown area.

I really can't be bothered to keep dying it, it's a pain in the arse, expensive if done properly and my hair is dry and brittle.

Would it be awful if I just grew out the colour and never bothered again????

Grey can be just gorgeous - save dye money, invest in foxy haircut and go for it.

JackieNo · 27/05/2008 21:59

Maybe have some subtle highlights to ease the growing out, so you don't have a definite line, iyswim? I'd love to, but the difference is just too scary.

TigerFeet · 27/05/2008 22:07

Perhaps I will get some intermediate highlights, good idea

Foxy haircut - lol - I think the best I can manage is presentable

MIL has pure white hair and it looks great, possibly because even at almost 70 she hasn't succumbed to an old lady "do"

I'm hoping that it will grow out in great condition and people will be so bedazzled by my shiny, healthy locks that they won't be fazed by the grey.

Am slightly wary of ending up looking like my Mum's sister instead of her daughter though [nervous]

I agree - that pure white can look fab. Mine would be v salt and pepper. Maybe you could have it all dyed pure white....

JackieNo · 27/05/2008 22:24

The real thing .

TigerFeet · 27/05/2008 22:36

like this

at the second one - the grey/white hair I have is thicker so maybe it will be that gorgeous

KerryMum

Perhaps I should leave it and then in a year's time dye it again for instant impact and lots of "ooh you look sooooo much younger" comments?

I am a lazy cow it has to be said. I really, really can't be bothered with it any more and I can't afford to get it done professionally.

I may dye the whiskers purple a la Billy Connolly

Tigerfeet - you are too young to be grey. Get dying it.

TigerFeet · 27/05/2008 23:09

Oooh I like being too young to do something!

Still can't be arsed though [adamant]

What kind of grey are you? I love that really steely grey. And if you have a youngish-looking face I think that grey hair can make you look younger - people think "prematurely grey" rather than "grey". Like that reporter on CNN, errr, Anderson Cooper or whatever his name is.

You have to have a fantastically good haircut and it must be straight and in superb condition. I am going to have to straighten my hair or dye it when I go grey. Curly grey hair looks witchy and mad. I'll look like someone who hoards sugar packets from cafes and who weeps whenever anyone steps on a snail because they've all got souls.
