Is it possible to have this dress altered to two sizes smaller?

I’ve lost weight and would like to wear this dress. It had a boned bodice and quite delicate stitching. Is it possible for a professional dressmaker/tailor to alter it from size 14 to a size 10-12?

Probably, but it might cost as much as the dress to do it!

I'm sure it will - at the very worst the dressmaker can unpick all the seams and cut the material to be a smaller size and re-sew it.

I've had dresses altered to be smaller and the costs were from memory around £80 - £150.

Is this the same dress? If it is, definitely worth spending the money on. If not, it's so similar to the Erdem dress, probably still worth it.

Does it actually need altering? It looks rather tight in those photos so although it will fit differently, it might still actually fit

I think it fits perfectly in those pics!

That was unnecessarily rude. It looks great in the pics.

Paaseitjes · 27/07/2025 17:41

It wasn't rude, just observation from someone who gains and loses weight regularly and has a tailor for a grandmother! It's creased around the waist and pulling at the arms around the bust, which normally mean it's at least half a size too small! It might only need to go down half a size which would be a much more realistic alteration. From my experience it's so easy to kid yourself that clothes fit when you've put on a bit, especially if the next size up is definitely still too big, when actually they merely fasten

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 27/07/2025 17:45

It's a beautiful dress but tbh if OP has only gone down 1 size then I don't think it needs to be altered. The dress fits in the pictures. I don't think it fits perfectly.

If it is altered and OP puts weight back on no dressmaker will be able to make it bigger again.

Could you post a photo of how it fits you now? Is it just the waist that needs altered, or do the sleeves need slimmed down too, and are your shoulders popping out of the neck hole etc?

Yes, need to see a "now" photo. On the "then" photo, it's a lovely dress but it was neat fitting then. I'm not sure if less neatness merits expensive alterations.
