Boots (and clothes) for winter in NYC

As per the title. I’m looking for footwear for NYC in December. I’ll definitely be taking more than one type of footwear but don’t want to take too much due to luggage allowances.
My preference would be trainers and/or Ugg boots, for comfort, and the Uggs for warmth. But neither hold up in rain or even snow so I’m looking for a comfortable and weather proof pair of boots. Something somewhat fashionable, I’ve looked at Ugg yose and north face.

Also, any tips for clothes and particularly coats welcome. I get very hot when going inside so layers will be key so I can strip them off. I don’t like feeling restricted or wearing anything tight. But it’s going to be cold!!!

Thing is, it might not be cold! We went in February a couple of years ago. Meant to be Baltic cold according to our research etc. Everyday bar the last day when we flew home was between 15 and 20 degrees. We bought t shirts and shorts from GAP it was so warm. Last day granted was definitely a coat and hat day.

Primark are good for thermals. Take trainers that you’ve worn in. If I had my time again, I don’t think I’d take a big coat. I’d take layers so something like a thermal body warmer from Unliquo and then one of their thermal but packable puffer style jackets. I am doing just that for our Norwegian cruise next year.

I bought waterproof boots that look a bit like timberland boots from the local mountain warehouse outlet. They’ve been brilliant but only needed on the last day in New York. Have had more use out of them here. Thermal socks too.

Just adding more of a what would I do if I had my time again is that I would buy thermals, pack them unopened, keep the receipt and if I didn’t use them return them when I came home. I would take 3 days worth of clothes maximum and use the hotels free laundry for a quick wash mid week when we had pizza and beer in our hotel room. We didn't do anything fancy at night as we were too knackered from everything we did during the day.

Helpful tips thank you. Will have a look at Uniqlo.

No problem. Have a fantastic time. I loved it and can’t wait to go back. Didn’t manage to do everything I wanted to.

I've worn Blundstones with buffalo wool innersoles for the past 8 years. They don't leak.

For a coat, I wear my husband's North Face puffer jacket that has lost it's puff with layers underneath and when it's really cold, a North Face puffer coat.

If it's really cold, I wear a Uniqlo Heat Tech long sleeve shirt under a long sleeve t or sweater. I knit so I wear hand knt wool socks. I have wool hats and scarves too.

I was there in Nov/Dec and wore cowboy boots and trainers, and had a long coat with furry trim.

It was a bit wet and cold but no worse than London.
