London trip.. Can anyone help me!?

I’ve been looking through threads on here and quite inspired by some of the advice and ideas submitted, and wondered if I started my own thread I might eve get some advice too!

Im looking for advice for a weekend in London, sightseeing with the (young) kids in August. It’s a big treat as we rarely have a weekend as a family, so I’d love to feel confident and looking my best.

I’m very much NOT stylish, and have never been any good at making the best of myself. I have quite a petite figure (size 8), 5 foot 4, no hips or boobs (A cup!), quite muscular/ long legs, but struggle to look nice in anything but gym clothes, denim shorts, tucked in tops and high waisted skinny jeans. I really don’t like my tummy, c section and loose skin so it needs to be hidden!! I really have no clue how to dress myself as feel that clothes look frumpy or ridiculous as I have no womanly curves… I end up buying things, putting them on, feeling like a twat and reverting back to the same 3 or 4 outfits!!

Are there any styles or shapes that would work for my shape?? I have often thought about getting a personal stylist at a department store but don’t really have a day to myself to do it.

If you are coming to London in August with young children you will want to be comfortable. I suggest you wear what you feel best in. Nobody dresses up so you don’t need anything fancy.

Wishing14 · 26/07/2025 12:57

@Rocknrollstarthank you, that’s fair enough. It’s more about style/ shapes. I want comfy everyday outfits I’ll wear again and again but the point is most of my clothes are very tired and old. So I don’t feel very comfortable or good in what I have! It’s not about London as such, I lived there for many years when I was in my 20s.

I’m very much the same as you. Wide leg linen trousers with a fitted top and adidas white smart trainers for comfort is my new go to outfit - so obviously I’ve bought 5 pairs of the same in different colours - and I’ll probably hate them next week 🤦‍♀️

Wishing14 · 26/07/2025 13:01

@babasacloverooh I’ve never tried wide leg, I always assumed it wouldn’t be right for being short!

If you're size 8 and 5ft 4, you'll be fine in wide legs! (You could get cropped ones if the full length make you feel swamped.) There's a pair from New Look that posters on here have bought and liked.

I agree with PP that no one will really be looking at what you wear... but it's true you don't often see skinny jeans much in London nowadays.

Hi there. I think a pair of slightly cropped relaxed fit jeans with nice trainers and a slightly fitted t-shirt/top would be comfortable and stylish. I wore this when I was last in London and blended in just fine.

I am 5ft 1 and wear this type of combo all the time and I always feel confident (I’m not as slim as you but I still feel confident 12/14).

I got my jeans from the next petite range and bought in bulk as I just love them!

Wishing14 · 26/07/2025 13:22

@zaxxonthank you, the new look ones are a good shout, can see lots on Vinted. @Palmtreesinthedistanceyes that’s another thing I’ve not really tried before, cropped - as you can tell I’m not very experimental with my fashion! Where do you all get nice fitted tops? I struggle to find good ones.

You’re 5’4? That’s an inch taller than me - and, apart from floor length knitted wool dresses which would be prohibitively expensive to have shortened, I can’t think of anything I’m unable to wear - with the odd bit of alteration where necessary.

Obviously I shop to suit my proportions and tastes, but I buy from mainstream brands and really never have to think about my height.

So I think you can probably be a bit more open to experimentation than you have been!

Palmtreesinthedistance · 26/07/2025 14:01

@Wishing14For me, I find that if the jeans sit just at the ankle bone, it doesn’t make me look shorter and is just right. I try to strike the right balance of relaxed fit too as I need them to be somewhat shaped over my hips otherwise they drown me out!

Top wise, I will link a few of my recent buys:

https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/tops/pink-short-sleeve-striped-t-shirt/p/929441379?extcam=UK_PPC_PLA_Designer_Core_Google_DV_m_AGID_126584461116_PRID_9294516&_cclid=Google_EAIaIQobChMIhKGrqcfajgMVFphQBh2ZsjxLEAQYASABEgKqlfD_BwE&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=1930161284&gbraid=0AAAAAD2UatPy5MOvZHXtnRUjBlukA-KuG&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhKGrqcfajgMVFphQBh2ZsjxLEAQYASABEgKqlfD_BwE - I LOVE this t-shirt. It’s slightly oversized so you can tuck a bit and it looks lovely.

I can’t link the Next top so here’s a screenshot. It’s actually really lovely on, paired with a gold necklace.

Shoe wise - I’ve been wearing adidas bold trainers for a lift (they are super comfy). I have them with dark green and light pink stripes.

I wouldn’t class myself as “trendy”
by any means, but I sure feel good wearing these types of clothes, and confident. I’m 44 for reference (but look in my 30s - blessed by skin gods somehow!) and I have a 3 year old in tow everywhere I go!

Thank you so much for the ideas! I’ve bought a few different wide leg trousers, including linen ones and trainers like you shared but a different colour @Palmtreesinthedistance really love them! The platform is great. All Vinted so hoping it fits! I can take them up if needed. Just need to look for some tops now. I’m going to try @AixellencyI was thinking about it and I remember getting nasty comments from girls at school when I dressed up and ever since I think I’ve dressed to fade into the background. But, life’s too short for that!

August?
Well the only thing I'd say is that, USUALLY, August is the only month that London sweats!
What I mean is that for the rest of the year the temperature in London isn't much different from elsewhere in the U.K., but in August the humidity tends to build up and the centre CAN be horrible.
Of course, having said that, we all know that the weather in this country can change by the second, so this August there might be a blizzard!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 27/07/2025 02:06

I’m 5’4 with short legs and wear Fat face slim sway cropped jeans.
A bit more current than Skinnies, but no excess fabric flapping around
I suggest layers so you can remove as needed
Take some wipes and a deodorant so you can freshen up if necessary.
Have an Amazing time!
