Skincare that does not pill

Mayve · 25/07/2025 10:55

I’ve got horrible “pilly” skin. I’ve just moisturised and it’s rolling off in clumps.

I exfoliate with dermatological microfoliant couple of times a week and Medik8 press and glow every other day

My skin is a bit red and can be rough but intense moisturisers often pill

I’ve tried
Fresh
Sam Bunting (terrible)
Cerave
La Roche posay
Aveeno
inkey list
CT magic cream
Skin and Me
and lots of other mix and match bits

If you have skin that sounds similar have you found anything that works? I want soft smooth skin that’s nice for make up.

My next move is to go full Medik8 but before I spend out thought I would ask for recommendations
Thanks

Hi am a skincare buff are you leaving long enough for the creams to settle before applying make up.

Mayve · 25/07/2025 10:58

Thanks - yes I think so. I leave at least ten mins.

that is a bit odd then. I only get pilling rarely. maybe if am using a sun screen too. Sorry not much help

Quirkswork · 25/07/2025 11:02

Do you mean your skin itself is flaking? Or your products pill? If the latter, it's usually because as the PP suggested, you haven't let each layer absorb or that you are using silicone products or oil based products water water based products. Eg foundations with a silicone primer can pill.

mamagogo1 · 25/07/2025 11:04

Mine does this, didn’t know it had a name! Sunscreen is the worst of all. Night moisturiser seems better anecdotally

Mayve · 25/07/2025 11:04

I think it’s the product, my skin isn’t especially flaky….
Honestly I have bought whole ranges and applied them in the directed order and it pills. Sam Bunting I literally put on the sunscreen after everything else and it almost gathering together in lumps in front of my eyes…..

What are you applying beforehand? It must be because of that and it doesn't work with it. Does it pill of you apply it to bare skin?

statetrooperstacey · 25/07/2025 11:21

I get this a lot, I use a really thin light moisturiser in the morning before make up and use an intensive moisturiser at night . I’ve just bought a massive tub of astral and use it like a face mask at night. My skin has never looked so hydrated , going to stick with astral I think, and it’s about a tenner for a bucket of it. Although no good for before make up as you stay greasy for hours .

EnglishRain · 25/07/2025 11:36

Use less product and less products, only way to guarantee no pilling for me. I find the ordinary better than the likes of LRP, less likely to pill.

Gowlett · 25/07/2025 11:42

Are you using too much? I use a small blob, less than a penny.

Then rub that between my palms, and rub into my face quickly.

Quirkswork · 25/07/2025 15:06

Do you rub it in maybe too vigorously? I don't know what it could be!

UmberMoose · 25/07/2025 15:25

Try to give a gap and maybe it can take sometime to show up so here goes the routine I follow and there is no issue as such:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Micellar water
Cerave moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

outerspacepotato · 25/07/2025 15:30

Try gently pressing in your moisturizer instead of rubbing it around.

If your skin is red and rough, you might be over exfoliating.

AllLopsided · 25/07/2025 18:14

I have found this happens with a lot of products. Currently using the Caudalíe Resveratrol Lift range with no problems. Serum, night moisturiser and a facial oil (different brand) at night, day cream in the morning and 15 mins before applying makeup.

TheGander · 25/07/2025 18:33

Is it your skin, or an ingredient in the creams? Silicone heavy creams will pill- look for any ingredient ending in “cone” eg dimeticone.

Saxendi · 25/07/2025 19:01

If you leave a bit of time between putting products on that should help, also I was advised that it’s best not to use too many products, in the am, I just use vit C then spf followed by a bb cream and don’t ever get pilling issues.

Sandwich method also helps

Setyoufree · 28/07/2025 13:19

Eucerin hyaluron normal face cream is fine for me, but if I get the rose coloured one it all pills back off.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/07/2025 17:47

You've fallen for the lie that you need layers of products.

Honestly, one fairly basic moisturiser with SPF for your skin type is all you need! Leave it to settle for at least 5 minutes before applying any make up. I currently like CeraVe but I can also tolerate that lovely Biore watery essence on my sensitive skin (not at the same time, I mean when my one moisturiser runs out).

To exfoliate use your usual cleanser on a slightly rough cotton face cloth.

If your skin is naturally red there's nothing you can do to change it from within, you need to use a light colour correcting BB cream - I highly recommend the Bourjois one.
