God knows what has happened, but my hair has turned to frizzy straw in 5 months. I have tried various de-frizzers, deep moisturisers, tried clarifying shampoo, and nothing changes the horrible rough texture. Before this happened I could wash/style my hair and then it would behave(ish) for several days before I needed to wash again. It was soft and fairly smooth. Now, its so coarse that just one sleep and it goes bonkers. Just as well Im single!! Does anyone know a hairdresser who specialises in difficult hair? Im prepared to pay if someone can get to the bottom of why and what I can do about it.

This happened to me when I started using keratin shampoos and conditioners.

PeonyPatch · 23/07/2025 18:34

it could be a deficiency - iron deficiency for example can cause coarse hair. Perhaps consider a blood test.

Otherwise, I swear by kerastace products.

Yeah could be too much protein. Sounds like your hair could need moisture rather than protein based treatments. Too much protein can make the hair brittle and coarse.

where are you based?
would travelling to London be an option?

sweetpickle2 · 24/07/2025 10:31

This is expensive but with good reason- transformed my hair when it started doing the same due to perimenopause https://www.spacenk.com/uk/haircare/hair-treatment/leave-in-treatment/leave-in-molecular-repair-hair-mask-MUK200039223.html?dwvar_MUK200039223_size=UK200039223&quantity=1

I second the K18 hair mask above. It's a miracle worker and the little bottle lasts for ages as you only need a couple of pumps each time you use it.

To be honest, that’s very expensive, and I think for that price, OP is better off going to a specialist / salon for them to do a treatment and make recommendations, but that’s my opinion!

sweetpickle2 · 24/07/2025 10:47

Fair enough! It's what my hairdresser recommended to me, and as PP said it lasts ages to much more cost effective in the long term. But appreciate we all have different hair!

This will be at least half the price of going to a salon and getting a treatment. I did this in November last year and guess what the salon recommended to me...yes, the K18 mask!

Depends if the OP has a trusted salon already I suppose; if she's looking to spend some money but less than a visit to a hairdresser then the K18 is excellent.

But everyone’s hair is different… k18 may have been good for YOUR hair but not necessarily OP’s. If it was me anyway, I’d spend a bit more seeing a professional rather than forking out £70 for something that may or may not work. If it was 0-£20 maybe, but not £70…

Is it curly and where are you based?

Mine went dry when my thyroid first slowed down working.

It might be worth getting some blood tests just to check things are OK health wise.

AnneOnn · 24/07/2025 12:52

Thanks for suggestions...I think I do need to see a professional, I posted before a while back and tried a (to me) pricey-ish product that someone recommended but it hasnt helped. I do have a bit of a wave if I leave it to dry naturally, though that has gone full on frizz in it's current state. Im having some bloods done soon, so I'll see if I can tack thyroid onto that. Im in Bristol.

I hear you OP, my hair was ruined by Olaplex, it's only just getting back to normal

PeonyPatch · 24/07/2025 20:43

I would say that moisture is key for coarse, frizzy or dry hair. So focus on nourishing and moisturising your hair as much as poss . Deep conditioning treatments, serums, oils. Leave in treatments. Try to limit heat styling.

you could try Philip Kingsley clinic in London
https://www.philipkingsley.co.uk/clinics/london-clinic

coarse hair info: https://www.philipkingsley.co.uk/hair-guide/hair-science/coarse-hair.html

you can buy some Philip Kingsley products in travel size btw, so might be a good (purse friendly) place to start.

silk hair bonnets or pillow cases for sleeping.

Our hair can become coarser with age too.
