Are really posh handbags a good investment?

I'm talking Chanel, Dior...so much money!
If you had the money would you?

I think Chanel hold their value quite well. I would have one if I could afford it!

MirrorMirror1247 · 23/07/2025 18:07

Nope. I don't see the point in designer handbags. What do they do that an ordinary bag from the high street doesn't?

Sodthesystem · 23/07/2025 18:09

Hermes and Chanel always used to be. Not so sure about chanel now though.

Not Louis Vuitton anymore. They use cheaper material than they used to and it's not lasting.

Dior possibly but it's a risk.

Speaking as someone who has dabbled.

Balenciaga and Dolce gabbana don't hold their value.

I'd not risk it unless you can afford Hermes tbh.

I've heard that after a certain price point, you're literally just paying for the name.

There was the person online who deconstructed the designer bags and showed the materials and how they were actually worse quality than other brands at say £150-200.

So you're paying over a grand for a name only. And to draw attention to yourself and maybe get robbed.

It's not better craftsmanship or quality leather, fixings etc.

Depends what you mean by investment.

A bag that will last a lifetime - probably, but you can buy just as good quality for much less.

A financial investment likely to produce good returns? Very unlikely.

They’re really for people who love bags, and also love the status that comes from having particular brands. That is a kind of investment.

Look and feel beautiful. Give you an amazing experience when you shop for them. Make you feel a bit pampered ever time you use them. Hold their value. Be something your grand daughters will covet.

I could go on….

Investment for making money back? No, 99% of them loose their values as soon as you're out the door of the shop.
Investment for quality? Some potentially, but you might be best going vintage depending on the brand. For example Chanel doesn't use real gold on the CC clasp anymore so you'd be better looking for an older model in new condition. A lot of brands are essentially plastic, you're paying for the name more than anything.

I literally saw a video about this today - apparently Birkins consistently go up in value 14% per year, obviously if you don’t use them/use them sparingly 😂 ~ but it covered the risks too, like if Hermes had a giant scandal tomorrow, or suddenly decided to make more bags so there’s no waiting list, the prices would drop so it’s riskier overall than just investing the money.

That being said, I have my dream bags lined up in my head waiting for a lotto win. So 💁‍♀️ I guess I would!

I can only compare my Mulberry to my Radley and the Mulberry is a much better handbag in terms of feel, quality and drape.

Honestly, none of those are things I consider when I'm shopping for a new bag. My criteria are along the lines of "can I fit all my stuff in here and do I like it enough to carry around?". And I don't have kids so I'm very unlikely to have any granddaughters 😂

If I had the money, absolutely I would buy high end hand bags. I love Dior, but resale tends not to be great. The investment for me is the design and beauty. However I can get that from the mid range bags I currently wear!

kimbear87 · 23/07/2025 21:47

As a posh person myself, I’d say that these brands are not really marketed towards posh people, but to those who wish to increase their perceived social status.

mamagogo1 · 23/07/2025 21:50

No, not a guaranteed investment, even in mint condition (which means you can’t use them) no guarantee they will outstrip standard invest funds. Some do, but some investments do better than others! If you have the money and want a special bag then it’s your money your choice but investment, no

SleepingisanArt · 23/07/2025 22:07

I have a limited edition (also rare colour) Louis Vuitton bought in 2010 when it was released. I have used it every day since. It had some scuffs and a little colour loss so I sent it to LV for 'leatherwork'. It came back looking almost new (I asked not to have all the scuffs removed). In that respect it was a fantastic investment. The 2nd hand value is £500 less than the original price due to its condition- those with light or no wear are selling for an average of £1000 more than the original price.... I bought it as a special treat because I liked the shape and especially the colour and had saved the money! The family joke that it will be buried with me.....
