Suncream stains!

I am having a nightmare with suncream stains this summer, which is crazy as I haven't really noticed this issue before, but maybe I'm using a terrible formula?

I'm going to try some different suncreams, but I need these stains out. I'm thinking of trying some of the tips from here and here, but just wondering if anyone has some further tips and tricks (or knows if the advice in these blogs definitely works)

I think I'm worried/overthinking as I've stained my favourite top haha 😅

Put them out in the bright sunshine. My whites have never been so white as when I dried them in the sun in Spain - sun cream stains too!

What are you using @ClaudiaMM ? Nivea is awful for staining. Things go a greeny yellow colour. Dreadful stuff. My friend uses this on holiday and each time we've had a thick, greasy, yellow tide mark around the pool and on towels and swimsuits.

I have used Vanish Gold for whites this year and it’s shifted them

elm26 · 23/07/2025 22:10

Boots own brand Soltan is the only one I’ve found so far that doesn’t stain, I also swear by the it for my 2yo DD. I use the 50+ protect and play for sensitive skin on her and she’s never burned or her eczema flare up due to the cream.

MsSmartShoes · 23/07/2025 22:38

I’m experiencing the same as I’ve been applying Eucerin suncream to my face and neck daily. Whites are wrecked.

SophiaSW1 · 23/07/2025 22:42

Boots soltan doesn’t stain at all and it’s a great sun cream.

Yes Nivea! I got it on Boots advantage and so many regrets haha

I get it out of school shirts by giving it a scrub with fairy liquid and leaving for about an hour then put in the machine without rinsing off. Wash at 30 with bio powder and vanish for whites

Wolbutter · 25/07/2025 08:55

You want napisan. Works on all the suncream stains. I also use Eucerin which I love and I don't react to but it does stain whites

SummerbodyIwish · 25/07/2025 09:06

Soak in white vinegar ( not the brown malted stuff) then wash in a hot a temperature as garment allows

Any stains, it's a joke in our house that I go straight to 'what does Nancy say'?

Nancy Birtwhistle was on GBBO and makes all her own cleaning stuff.

Here she is telling you how to remove sun cream stains:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJEkrsBKOmm/

And this is her pure magic cleaner recipe:

You will need

200g citric acid

150ml just-boiled water

20ml eco-friendly washing-up liquid

10–20 drops tea tree oil

1 pint measuring jug

Small whisk

400ml glass bottle with spray attachment and screw top

Place the measured crystals in a heatproof measuring jug and pour over just-boiled water. Stir until the liquid is clear and the crystals have dissolved, then simply add the eco-friendly washing-up liquid and tea tree oil and mix well using a small whisk. Leave the liquid in the jug to cool completely and uncovered for a few hours then pour into a spray bottle and it is ready to use.

I’ve literally never had this issue before but had it with a few creams this year annoyingly. I haven’t had an answer so I’ve just relegated the affected tee shirts to ones I wear by the pool - but the Soltan aerosol and a year old Lacura aerosol sun tan cream have caused be problems this time. I used the Lacura one last year too with no issues so I assume it’s an age thing.

PeonyBlush10 · 26/07/2025 08:39

Rub washing up liquid on stained area, dip into white vinegar and leave overnight. Wash as normal. I tried this on a white shirt and it worked brilliantly well. It was a tip from MN, an older thread.

I'm saving this thread as I recently had to junk one of my favourite white T-shirts after soaking it in bleach.

Another shout for Nancy Birtwhistle! I've used loads of her cleaning recipes too recently and am fazing out many of our shop bought cleaning products. She's great!

I’ve found that, when I’ve soaked in bleach, the sun cream stains go bright pink! Alarming, but that disappears as the garment dries.
