Very, very easy way to dye just a few grey strands

Hi, I've got a few grey strands on the side of my head that I'd like to cover up for a single occasion this week end. I'm looking for something very quick (shouldn't take longer than 10min) and very simple (should be so fool proof that even a fool like me can't mess up). And something that won't inadvertently suddenly start leaking or leaving stains on my face during the event. It doesn't have to last for longer than a wash. Colour matching is not an issue as my hair is just black.

I bought one of those l'oreal hair mascara thingies a while ago but when I tried it (about 9 months after buying) it was all dry and clumpy. I'm not sure if that's how it is meant to be or if it has just dried out because I didn't use it for so long but I'm reluctant to buy it again in case that is just how it always is. But I'm looking for something similar that requires no more effort than eg pulling a mascara like wand through those few strands of my hair.

Thank you!!

I use the Colour Wow powder, it's expensive but lasts forever. It's not 100% coverage though, just blends the greys in a bit better.

Alternatively is to get a beard dye kit (hear me out!). You can mix up a very small amount and dye in less than 10 mins. I'd definitely do this at least a couple of days before the event though in case you get any dye on your skin...

Colour Wow - thirded. It’s excellent and what all the top salons recommend in an emergency between appointments too. Impossible to mess it up and I would know - am useless with hair!

Would an eyebrow dye kit work? I use Schwarzkopf Brow Tint, very quick and easy. Never thought to use it on the few greys I have, but I might try it.

Magic retouch root touch up spray is good... Edited as I forgot what it was called.

LightOnTheGrey · 21/07/2025 12:13

Thanks everybody. Is the powder easy to apply? Does it work for only roots? I've got whole strands of grey hair that I won't to cover but it doesn't have to be perfect or complete. I just want to reduce the grey a bit without it looking weird and with minimal effort.

I'm also confused because it says it washes out but then you csn go swimming with it? So is it shampoo rather than water that washes it out?

I think, this is what I used before but it was a mascara type of wand rather than a spray. Is the spray easier to use?

I much prefer the clairol root spray to colour wow powder or the spray in the green can.

My preferred option is to dye using clariol root touch up dye.

I'm in the same situation! I've decided to try buying a pack of ordinary permanent hair dye and mixing a small amount of the dye and developer together to paint onto a few strands. I tried using pre-mixed henna dye for ease but it was rubbish and didn't cover anything.

I don't mind about the greys being obvious but it's contributing to an overall washed out look in my face so I'm hoping this might make a difference!

I do that but just use part of the clairol root touch up dye.

For those people using part of a pack of dye, can you use the remainder at a later date? I wondered if it expired during storage.
I use Clairol root touch up and have been too nervous to use leftovers. Thanks.

It’s not recommended to save it

i do this, I’ve got a few greys on my eyebrows and a few on my temples. Once I’ve done my eyebrows is just use the rest on the bits at the front. One packet lasts around 6 uses so it is very cost effective

You can't mix it and then save for a later date.

I just put in approx half of each of the containers and then save the other half and mix when I need to use it again.

So I just tried the wow powder. It does lightly cover the greys but it also stained my skin so I'm not sure if the area I applied it to looks darker because the greys are covered by powder or because the skin underneath is stained black.

Is there any trick to stop my skin staining? I can wipe it off tye hair free skin but not the skin under hair. Also would it look better if I put some oil or something in my hair first to make it a bit shinier or smoother?

Also, I can see how it could work really well to cover just the roots but I don't have grey roots but long grey strands. Maybe I just need to properly dye my hair.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. The wow powder is definitely simple to apply so that's great. I might give the clairol root spray a try next.

I have this and I go to hairdresser and have a ‘partial root touch up’ it lasts about three months. I can’t be bothered doing my own. I have a few grey strands here and there and a small patch.
