If you’re a size 16, what do you wear that you feel nice in?

OneDayIWillLearn · 20/07/2025 08:46

I’m 5ft 6, currently weigh just over 13 stone and am a size 16. I’m fairly in proportion, I’m ’curvy’ and still got a waist and reasonable legs but tummy/ arms are sore points and I generally feel big and low on confidence. If you are at all similar size/ shape, do you have any particular clothes you wear that are comfortable but you feel good and not frumpy wearing?

For background, I’ve put on quite a lot of weight this year and have just tipped into BMI 30 and a solid size 16. Everything in my wardrobe is now feeling tight or just won’t fit, plus I have a lot of skinny jeans, leggings etc which I now feel frumpy and out of date in.

I’m going to loose weight (I’ve done it before and will again!) but realistically due to holidays/ travelling it will be the end of August before I’m doing it in earnest and actually loosing. I don’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe in size 16 but also at this rate I literally have nothing I like to pack and I’m worried the holidays are going to be overshadowed by feeling crap about my size and tight clothes.

So I’d love to buy a few things I can wear a lot for a month or two to see me through and hopefully feel good in for the trips abroad!

Check out Long Tall Sally Op.

They have a nice selection of stuff but importantly their tops are long enough to actually cover your back when you bend over!

Plus - if anyone else reading has this issue - the necklines are nice and deep for avoiding too much boob shelf on the well endowed. Some nice square necked t shirts/tops which are v flattering.

Their 14/16/18 clothes are in proportion rather than just 'bigger'.

Wrap dress with a V or Scoop neck rather than a high neck (makes my top half feel material heavy, if you know what I mean) - same with T-shirts, high round necks seem to be wearing me rather than me wearing them.

I had a TV binge of a 50's series 2 years ago and got hooked on Afternoon Tea dresses, and get loads of compliments, but please keep in mind I'm probably 20 years older than you, OP. Mid calf (not longer, again, too material heavy) but with a good "non-clingy" skirt, waistband that is on my waist rather than under bust (again, material heavy). Not puffed sleeves or bottom flounces for me (loads of unnecessary material and I'm not Anne of Green Gables). Sugarhill Brighton (mentioned elsewhere on here) did some fabulous ones but I'm personally not keen on what they have this season. This one is very similar to what I own (bought 4 different colours/patterns of Sugarhill Brighton's last year - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306262035259?_skw=sugarhill+brighton&itmmeta=01K0KS7KD8C2M72B417E0Z8XXC&hash=item474ea3cb3b:g:EWgAAeSwG~NoBpzG&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA8FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1f7r76lEB16bzhdTltY3pd19BLAuIzGUMzPJjyZgIMv2Ae3USsi1PcF3HedqiWC6q7wO80TlXK50PIQHBdTWO2f9J5jL5m0YudxA9u%2FXTGJzSzvkSnDARK6fsymhd0kncU7ciGPcYasdef6vaSRDMt3Vqr52%2FPw5NnPQGHmJQryRY%2BK9uJ5QE%2FdyxureDyexQHS52EokIYUjxrb3Ytv3W71Qr7c2mLWevLovyjZt77Gf97u%2B9pAwJf8bOEnQbl4MT%2FedggOq%2BdX4JlwaqjBJ4Q29DY3FOshoRizpMDElia1nA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM_rae-YRm

I wear lots of dresses, especially ones that I think you would call Empire line. They come in under the bust to the waist then flare out. Cover my podgy tummy

I'm 5'8" size 16 and that style mes me look 6 months pregnant!

I'm loving Lucy and Yak Alexa trousers at the moment, in sober shades.

Piknik · 20/07/2025 13:23

Midaxi length dresses that are at their most cinched around your ribs. So sort of Empire line, but not too much fabric coming off the seam or it starts to get 'bunch'.

Dresses with a sort of gather/knot just above the hip work well too.

Scamp and Dude dress linked above is good example.
I also get a lot of dresses from Nobody's Child / Hush / Never Fully Dressed / John Lewis own brand.

Jeans: Cigarette or Carrot
Loose, slouchy tshirts with a V neck or lose neck.
NOTHING high-rise - mid rise or lower.

I am VERY similar height/weight to you OP. I need to get myself back to a 12-14, but these are working for now...

Amazing I’ve just ordered a pair, I’ve got high hopes!

I’m going to try a pair too

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/07/2025 13:46

hope you love them as much as me ladies! I got the dark blue and so tempted to get the grey as well.

Notellinganyone · 20/07/2025 13:56

Similar although a bit shorter than you. My go to this year has been Whistles. Their jumpsuits are comfy and flattering and don’t draw attention to stomach area.

I have these jeans, I’m a size 12 and 5ft 10, they are without a doubt the most flattering comfortable jeans I’ve ever owned. I get so many compliments on them you won’t be disappointed.

AngelRoja · 20/07/2025 14:15

During Covid I blew up like a beached whale, after being slim all my life! We went on holiday and none of my slim clothes looked good and I was miserable. So.I invested in a couple of cheap flowing, loose dresses and long tops for the trip which helped enormously. (And a one piece swimsuit) Dont forget that noone apart from your family will know what you looked like before and wont judge you. You'll be fine

SecretNameforMN · 20/07/2025 14:15

SHEIN has LOADS of size 16 clothes really really cheap, like £5 per garment, so £30 will get you 3 tops and 3 bottoms.

marmite2025 · 20/07/2025 14:17

I’m a 16/18 and 5ft 10 and really enjoying M&S wide leg trousers and their harper jeans

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 20/07/2025 15:38

I have just recently been able to squeeze into a size 16, down from a size 36 just 40 months ago.

I still have a pot belly, and with most of the stuffing gone my thighs, back and upper arms give shar pei puppy vibes, so I've been avoiding strappy mini dresses, and anything that clings to or compresses my stomach.

I agree that v and notch necklines look better if you have big breasts. I used to love a sweetheart neckline, but since losing 13 stone my decolletage looks more like a scrotum than breasts, making the lower cut styles I used to wear look shockingly unflattering.

Most recently I bought the lilac version of this cotton dress (with pockets) for £20 https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/santorini-womens-uv-jersey-wrap-dress-p28831.aspx/ and this half cotton half viscose dress https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/orchid-patterned-womens-uv-dress-p13937.aspx/mixed/ also for £20.

(They both come with a disclaimer accompanying both dresses warning the UV protection was only for areas covered by the fabric, which caught me by surprise and made me laugh. )

I've washed them both a few times now, they dry quickly, don't need ironing, and are easy to pack. Both styles fit comfortably and don't cling. Though I did remove the belt and loops from the lilac dress because being tied around the middle felt fussy and uncomfortable.

I'm toying with the idea of ordering the yellow version of the cotton wrap dress for my upcoming holiday.

I don't want to spend too much on size 16 clothes, having already spent a fortune over the past 2 and a half years just replacing a few items in sizes 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20 and 18. (It took over a year and 30kg to go down the first dress size but it has really speeded up now, I bought size 18 dresses in the spring sale that are too big now. The local charity shops have been doing well out of me. Perhaps that's where you should be looking for your temporary wardrobe while you get to grips with your weight gain?

Hopefully I'll manage to shift the last 9 kg and reach the holy grail of BMI 24.9. In which case I shall invest in higher quality garments. Including the size 14 cobalt blue cashmere cardie with pockets that I've been promising myself for a couple of years.

If you aren't happy being the UK average dress size my advice is to follow the advice on the Zoe food science podcasts, and improve your gut microbiome. It worked beyond my wildest expectations. I'm just peeved the information wasn't available 40 years ago when I was first diagnosed with PCOS, prediabetes and diabetes. I've never eaten so well in my life before.

Kaybee50 · 20/07/2025 16:35

I’m a similar size (maybe more of an 18) and I mostly wear
wide leg palazzo jeans or poplin trousers from M&S
Lucy and yak Alexa trousers
loads of denim dresses/ jumpsuits/ maxi length dresses - lots of black dresses too.
long skirts with boxy tshirts

shirts /blouses (cos, Oliver Bonas)
nice trainers

I hardly buy new now and mostly buy from Vinted. I sell lots on it too.

MillicentMaybe · 20/07/2025 16:49

I’m on a weight loss journey too just now. I don’t have loads of spare cash, but I’ve found Vinted great for top quality stuff for much cheapness. I only buy New with tags or new without tags. As I’ve moved down a size I’ve put what I’d bought back on Vinted.

Hankunamatata · 20/07/2025 17:29

Im currently on holidays drifting around on kaftan from amazon. Perfect cover up for pool but stylish enough for evening wear

JohnTheRevelator · 20/07/2025 17:35

I'm 5 ft 5 in and weigh 13 and a half stone. I'm a size 16 most of the time, occasionally an 18, depending on where the item of clothing is from. I feel good in jeggings and a T shirt in summer,or a calf-length dress if it's very hot. But the dress and T shirt must have short sleeves as I don't like showing my upper arms. I've lost 7 stone in weight over the last few years and the tops of my arms have a lot of excess loose skin. A severe case of bingo wings! In winter I like to wear jeans/jeggings and a jumper, with knee length suede boots. I get most of my clothes from George at Asda, Matalan and Simply Be.

PurpleDragon19 · 20/07/2025 17:40

I am similar size and weight and pretty much live in 50s style swing/tea dresses. Dolly and Dotty are my faves as well as lindy bop (got quite a few of mine from Vinted). Usually just wear them with a belt, sandals/flat shoes, don’t bother with petticoat or anything 😊

Nobody’s Child do this shape of dress pretty much throughout their range.

Mummy2Sienna · 20/07/2025 18:27

Cary’s Whitaker on instagram dresses great, she wears lots of wide leg, elasticated waist trousers with fitted vests tucked in which works well, tries on lots of stuff and has given me lots of ideas. She always looks really good

Yeah I’m with you on the ‘not too much material’ point! I’ve never got into puffed sleeves or midi/ maxi dresses (or even long skirts) for this exact reason. Though having read some of the comments on this thread I’m thinking I should maybe rethink this!! They do seem to look nice on a lot of people so maybe I need to experiment….
