Help-painful follicles and hair loss

9 months ago I had a bad episode of hair loss. I had a blood test which revealed slightly low iron but I never had a follow up with the GP and the hairloss eventually stopped.

I've had a full head of hair again for about 3 months and was so pleased, but it is now starting again 😪

I'm so upset! This time I'm getting a lot of follicle pain with it, kind of like when your scalp is sunburnt. But it keeps moving around in patches. Yesterday it was at the back of my head, today a spot on the side. If I move my hair from one direction to another the follicles hurt so much!

Does anyone know what this is and how to stop it?

It doesn't match anything I see online as there no redness, itchiness or spots like you would get with folliculitis. It's totally invisible but very real!

That's your hair follicles dying off.

It might be worth taking a vitamin D supplement if you don’t already. I had a very tender scalp for months, but since I started vitamin D it has stopped hurting. Your GP may check your level for you, but they can sometimes be reluctant.

Look up alopecia areata. That can cause patchy hair loss and is an autoimmune condition. See a dermatologist if you can for a biopsy.

I had sore follicles from seborrheic dermatitis with no other symptoms, but there could be numerous causes so go back to the GP. Sore follicles suggests some sort of inflammatory condition and is unlikely to just be the follicles dying off - otherwise all men and women would feel pain from male/female pattern baldness.

Hi OP,
Did you get anywhere with this? This is literally me at the moment.
