Hi

what do you guys recommend that has worked for fungal toe nails?

I’ve read about tea tree oil, Vicks, lamisil, curanail etc but hard to get a feel for real experiences.

already on meds that can upset liver so oral meds last resort.

thanks

I've had it for years now think I've tried everything. Also repeated athletes foot. Awful.

I have tried so many different concoctions, none have worked. I was prescribed Daktarin 2% cream (for something else) and noticed on the information leaflet that it can be used for nail infection.
I am so pleased that it actually works. I can now see clear nail starting to grow through after a few months of applying it.
Its available over the counter and doesn't need a prescription.

Lamisil once helps, but doesn't solve the issue.

What made the biggest difference for me was eating less sugar!

My DH was prescribed Terbafine for his fungal toenail infection, not only did it clear it up once and for all hair started to grow on his bald head!!!!
Not waves of lush hair, but hair all the same, he mentioned it to the GP, and he said it was a side effect. Bizarre!

Whitehorses67 · 17/07/2025 18:15

Be very wary of taking terbafine.
It can cause liver damage hence your gp will want regular blood tests before and after taking it.
My gp friend said he would never take it himself after working on a ward of patients with liver failure.

Oregano oil. It is much less harsh than tea-tree oil.
We tried it once after a range of all the usual treatments failed. It’s antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. The result was completely healed toes with no side effects. If you google it you’ll probably find you can buy it through Amazon.
I’m posting from Australia, so I’m not sure what’s available to you in the UK. It’s freely available here and in the USA.
If you decide to try it I hope your experience will be as successful as ours.

Ooh really? That's in the long link product upthread. You can get it in somewhere like Holland and Barrett

Holycows · 18/07/2025 20:17

The only thing that really works is medication from the GP. It's a fungicide(tablet) Turbinifine It's powerful stuff and works from the inside out you need to take it for 3 months. It's the only thing that really works, all the other remedies don't cut it. I took my Treatment 8 years ago, could only manage 6 weeks (because I was on other powerful meds) but it did the trick no more fungaled toe nails.

SuperShinyToothWoman · 19/07/2025 09:46

Terbinafine as an active ingredient. Take as much of the nail away as possible, apply religiously. And when you think it's gone , apply for another three months.

Pearl69 · 19/07/2025 09:55

I would be wary of taking tablets for this. My son did and ended up with all sorts of scans and emergency GP appointments as it messed up his bloods and an enlarged spleen which had to be investigated. Tea tree has worked for me but takes time.

doodledee · 19/07/2025 14:05

I made my own mixture of tea tree oil, diluted appropriately (quick Google says how much by) with olive oil. Never use neat! Few drops at bedtime and it has worked, took few months mind you
