How crap are Shein clothes?

Was looking for a few half sleeve blouses / tops for summer holidays and added a few to a basket on Shein, but somethings telling me not to buy. I realise the clothes are probably rubbish quality but are they as depicted? The photos are all photoshopped and it’s hard to tell what items actually look like.

if not has anyone got any suggestions for cheaper places to buy a few t-shirts / blouses / tops please? I’m specifically looking for half sleeve (not cap sleeve) to be worn with shorts / jeans as I prefer covering my upper arms.

Read the reviews on each item, they will tell you and quite often will have photos attached of an actual person wearing it

I always check the reviews for photos too! You can see the material and sizing better. I love shein though. Be prepared to get flamed OP, MNers hate shein and everything it stands for.
Edit to add - Try charity shops, cancer research ones are normally bigger with more options.
Primark, although I think this has gone up in price lately!
Temu! Similar rules to shein.
Matalan is amazing for work clothes at decent price.
Asda slightly more expensive but great in the sales x

I’ll put myself in the firing line with you because I love shopping from Shein, they’re not the sort of clothes that you can get away with wearing for years but I love a summer/winter haul from there in which I get some lovely stuff that I’ll use all season

I think they are one of those places you really have to check the composition as they have a lot of polyester and nonbreathable fabrics.
New Look is another one where you really have to hunt to filter out the polyester.

I have a Primark in my local town so mostly go there for basic bits. I find their £3 t shirts good. 100% cotton and they wash and wear really well.

Ethics, financial security , or quality?

Yesterdaytodaytomorrowagain · 14/07/2025 13:52

I’ve had a few t shirts and to be honest, they wash well , as good as any high street brand you might buy.

Unicorn34 · 14/07/2025 13:53

I have some really good bits from Shein... and some rubbish. I also look at Vinted as some bits are new or worn once.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 14/07/2025 14:00

For me it's a hit and miss.

I'm wearing a vest top right now from shein and it's so comfortable and lovely and soft. I also have tops that are as stiff as cardboard. They're in the washing basket at the moment so dunno how they'll come out.

I have wide leg trousers that are a lovely material and sit beautifully and other trousers, same style and size but different material and they make me look elephantine.

So, yeah, it's just pot luck I think.

Mistyglade · 14/07/2025 14:12

Because it’s cheap forced child labour made trash. Charity shops or check-the-sales for higher quality bought less frequently is how I roll these days. Think of the cheap material trash mountains before you buy that new top that’ll last one season at best.

JustAnOrdinaryHuman · 15/08/2025 09:41

Child labour
Throw away fashion
Environmental costs

Personally I prefer second hand or sales of places that have a better track record.

We also really don't need as many clothes as we think we do.

Don't get me wrong I have certainly bought fast fashion in the past & not even the distant past, but I'm trying hard to not buy new unless I have to & to research what I do buy new.

Our planet needs a break & we need to value human lives more than looking good.

Pretty shite for the women and children who make them…..
