I have £2k for a beautiful bag - which one, though?

RedPandaFluff · 13/07/2025 19:46

I am fortunate enough to have been given £2k by a very dear relative and instructed to treat myself to a new handbag.

This will be a treasured item (because of the person I will always associate with it) and a massive, unprecedented splurge.

So . . . what do I get? I want beautiful quality rather than the usual brand names . . . and not a work bag, as I work from home. A small crossbody, probably. Any suggestions? Thank you!

What an ignorant post. If someone isn’t interested in expensive bags they must be a wild camper? This is why I don’t like the ‘cult of bags.’ The awful one upwomanship and judgement involved. Exhibited on this thread by loads of ‘you just can’t afford it’ posts. Life isn’t a competition.

If you’re not interested in expensive bags then why read the thread? It’s very clear what it’s about from the title.

Sorry , you're correct.

Go for it OP. I hope you succeed in finding a beautiful bag that will provide lasting memories of someone who is dear to you. It is their wish that you treat yourself, so go ahead and I hope you will have many years of enjoyment from using it and a lifetime of happy memories of the relative who has gifted you the money to purchase it.

Ignore any sniping, snidey comments that some here have posted. It’s not their money but if they were gifted £2k they would be able to do exactly as they want with it (be that clear debt, spend it on household goods, bank it, whatever), but they should not be criticising you negatively for spending it the way you and your relative wish you to. Some here sound positively jealous and unpleasant.

Enjoy the gift.

I enjoy a bag thread. There's been some I didn't like but also some beautiful suggestions, like the Launer. But it's safe looking a bag thread as whilst I find them interesting there's no temptation for me to buy one- unlike say a boots thread.

So the same as the majority of high street stores that sell clothes then?

Do you lug all of your stuff about in a Tesco bag for life? If not why? It would do the job surely? Or do you spend more on a bag because you like it?

No. You’re buying from random online sites where there are no rules or regulations. If you’re doing it. Own it. Admit you don’t care about finding terrorism, little kids slave labour and generalised slavery - so long as you can pretend you’re rich eh

What do you mean, no? You claim that my bag is made by slave and child labour, but I said it’s the same as most stores on the high street. So, yes! Do you think the countries that these shops outsource their labour to have “rules and regulations”? Unlikely!

if you’ve ever bought any clothes from ASOS, SHEIN, H and M, marks and Spencers, Primark, New Look, Gap or Adidas (to name only a few!), then please get off your high horse.

and how am I pretending to look rich? I could buy the bag if I wanted to. I’ve already explained twice why I didn’t buy the original.

And I’m not buying from a “random websites”.

But there's a huge middle ground between a Tesco bag for life and a £2k handbag and there's a point beyond which you're not going to get any objective increase in quality, longevity or style/loveliness, you're simply spending money for the sake of it, likely for nothing more than branding and exclusivity.

So unless you're dripping in money or have always coveted a particular £2k bag, neither of which applies to the OP by the sounds of it, it's wise to question whether just because you can spend £2k on a bag, does it mean you should? Because there's probably endless small camera bags of beautiful quality for a fraction of that price, I'm thinking of the £3-500 bracket.

Another factor that no-one has mentioned is that if the OP buys a £2k bag, she's going to have to name it on her house insurance policy, so its going to cost her extra every year for the rest of her life otherwise if it's stolen it won't be covered.

Depends on the policy. I wouldn’t have to declare something worth £2k separately although of course it’s worth OP checking

Exactly! But who is anyone to draw the line in the sand and say this is the exact amount that’s acceptable to spend? And what is that amount? Would someone say ok, £200 is ok to spend on a bag, but £200.01 isn’t?

Adding an item to your home insurance isn’t a problem and usually doesn’t cost that much. I added about £15k total worth of bags, watches and jewellery to my “out of the house” items and I think it was about an extra £9 a month total, so I can’t see a £2k bag pushing a premium up that much.

Hello@isthismylifenow and anyone else saying you can buy two bags for £2k pre-loved, which second hand retail sites are you looking at? Everything on vestier/Vinted etc is at least £1.5k each! Would love to know where you get your authentic bargains from please! I'm also in the market for a bag - preferably a medium Loewe puzzle 😃

Are you claiming these high street stores use child slave labour? That’s quite the defamation.

here is m&s’s child labour policy with all the ways they mitigate against it. Other high street names have them too.

So, no. High street stores don’t support child labour in the way dodgy sites delivering direct from China do. Stop kidding yourself that you’re not doing anything wrong!

You’re very naive if you think a blanket statement on a website makes them totally clean! Do you not watch the news? But anyway whatever makes you sleep at night. I’d much rather buy one high replica every few years than loads of high street junk with questionable sources. I feel no guilt 👍

Obviously you need to factor in import taxes but look at buying bags from Japan. Their used designer bag is INSANE! Fakes are very, very rare and the prices are a lot cheaper than the rest of most of the world.

I'm no expert, and you’d need to do a bit of research but as far as I know there are plenty of sites that offer shipping to the UK, and lots of sellers on eBay too.

TokyoBoots · 17/07/2025 10:56

@19lottie82 thank you. Annoyingly I just came back from Japan but did not have much of a chance to look round any shops!! If you know of any sites please do share!

You won't get 2 Loewe puzzle bags for £2k on the resale market. But you would get something like a Mulberry and a small Bottega pouch for example.

For Loewe you will be looking at between £1,300 to £2,000 for a Puzzle, depending on size and condition.

I have bought from here in the past.

Me too! I am quite into these bag threads but have no particular interest in buying one.

You should check out the Hermes Game subreddit. It's weirdly fascinating. £2k would get you nowhere on there 😂

What a waste of two grand. 😭

I’m of the same opinion. If I spent £100 on a bag I’d think about whether it was worth it. I’d spend the money doing something. But then generally I think most material things are pointless.

But I guess for reasons I can’t quite understand some people think they are worth it otherwise they wouldn’t spend the money
