Why don’t I feel sassy in the oversized white shirt?

The ubiquitous white shirt I fell for watching too many capsule wardrobe videos.
Everything about is perfect, it’s crisp white cotton, it petite sized for the shortie me, it has a stepped hem, so shorter at the front not to take away from the leg length and longer at the back to cover the bum (not that I have anything to cover. It’s a little flaired, so can only be tucked at the front or not at all. Cuffed sleeves, dainty necklaces, cropped or long jeans, slim, straight or wide, kitten heels, slides or dainty trainers - the shirt makes me feel frumpy. It takes away so much mental energy that I am considering taking it to charity. Half tucked, it bulges at the front, left to hang it looks boring, lazy and unintentional.

What am I doing wrong, why do others look so sophisticated in a white shirt?

I have a black linen shirt, few years old now, but I feel exactly the same in mine. I wonder if it’s being on the shorter side that does it. When I do wear it, I’m forever fiddling, trying to get it to sit right, tucking it in and playing with it. I have worn it once this summer and now have given up!

TaborlinTheGreat · 13/07/2025 15:56

I think I'd be a bit worried if a shirt took away so much of my mental energy. I think you are seriously overthinking this. Different styles suit different people. Personally, oversized shirts (however crisp) hang vertically from my boobs and make me look like a marquee.

verycloakanddaggers · 13/07/2025 15:57

Different people like/suit different clothes - just let this item go and find something you do like.

Sunshineandrainbows23 · 13/07/2025 16:00

I'm not short but I can't wear a white shirt either. It makes me look enormous and adds 20 years. I just decided it just doesn't flatter my shape so went the path of least resistance .... I do sympathise @FullyLined ! I would love to be able to do the whole capsule wardrobe thing! Xx

isthismylifenow · 13/07/2025 16:04

OP, no matter what you read here, the white shirt does not suit everyone.

The colour white for a start does not suit everyone.

A collar definitely does not suit everyone.

It's okay if you cannot get it to work for you. Not everything works for everyone.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 13/07/2025 16:05

Just the words "crisp white shirt" make me shudder. I don't know who they suit to be honest. On the hangar, fine. Long legged tanned models wafting about in their pretend boyfriend's shirt, gorgeous. Real humans - crap. Don't know why they are recommended on here so often. They can go into room 101 with linen "arse widening" trousers.

FullyLined · 13/07/2025 16:13

@Eastendboysandwestendgirls Thank you, I needed that directness. Tried on the linen joggers style trousers a few years back and being size 6 - 8, felt like my backside was huge.

Just bagged it to take to charity tomorrow, someone will enjoy it, it just hangs like a silent reproach that I wasted the money,

Before you get rid, you could try it with different outfits? I prefer a white shirt unbuttoned over a tank/vest as a cover up in summer, goes well with denim shorts or jeans.

MadKittenWoman · 13/07/2025 16:34

I don’t understand oversized anything. I prefer clothes to actually fit.

itsmeagainagain · 13/07/2025 16:39

Agree with @TeacheeTeacherson and also how about a bikini cover up on holiday… sleeves rolled up

Pussert · 13/07/2025 17:05

I feel the same about a white shirt, looks great in minds eye then rubbish on me.

I always feel like I'm in school uniform

TheOGCCL · 13/07/2025 21:34

Neither white nor crisp suits me!

sophistitroll · 13/07/2025 22:00

Nothing about a shirt which is longer at the back is ever any good

Mmmkaay · 13/07/2025 22:04

Well I think it sounds fabulous and want to know where it's from! I've never managed to find the perfect white shirt.

LavenderBlue19 · 13/07/2025 22:07

They don't suit me at all, they all make me look like a booby waitress. Oversized shirts suit me, but not in white.

wheresmymojo · 13/07/2025 22:08

Both white shirts and black trousers can go straight from capsule wardrobes into the bin as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve had to make myself a list of things where I seem determined to block it out of my memory that the last 99 times I tried them, they looked crap.

White shirts are either a large tent hanging off my breasts or can be paired with the aforementioned black trousers to complete the ‘waitress at the start of her shift’ look.

MorrisZapp · 13/07/2025 22:13

Oh mate. White shirts are a long con, ask any woman over 50.

Unless you are Lauren Bacall you will look like a fourth former or a waitress. Propaganda I'm not falling for etc!

henlake7 · 14/07/2025 13:33

I think the only shirts I can pull off are those flannel plaid ones over a t shirt!
Then its only in a messy grunge way.

Like most things....it all looks better if you are very tall and slim (Im neither!).

Decisionsdecisions1 · 14/07/2025 14:01

I think you need height to pull it off. I don't even think you need to be particularly slim - I've seen taller women of various clothes sizes looking fabulous in tucked and untucked white shirts.

I'm 5ft, size 6 - the white shirt makes me look like either a rectangle (if untucked) or a balloon with an elastic around the middle (if tucked). (I look like neither of those in a neat top and wide leg trousers for example.)

My white shirt is now sitting in the back of the wardrobe taunting me.

FullyLined · 14/07/2025 17:04

It’s gone to charity this afternoon, I have even ironed it. It’s a strange relief not to see it in the wardrobe. I have a few silk shirts and they fit lovely as they are regular fit, drape and tuck in nicely, so I will stick to those shapes and fluid fabrics for shirts. Thank you all for moral support!
