Help me to glow up!

Morning all! So I’ve been on Mounjaro and so far have managed to lose just under 3 and a half stone. I’m pleased with the progress so far as I can move now without everything hurting, and my clothes feel so much more comfortable now. I could definitely incorporate more exercise which I’m planning to do over the coming weeks and months.

I’ve 5ft 5 and have gone from 15st 2lbs to 11st 11lbs so I’m still overweight with a stone or so to go before I’m “healthy”…the issue I have is that I thought I’d be feeling a lot better about myself than I do at the moment. I just look and feel so dull and grey. My hair is very lacklustre, thin and breaking and I haven’t had more than a trim since I can’t remember when. Definitely due a refresh but it’s in such poor condition it just looks crap all the time. My skin isn’t too bad but doesn’t look especially healthy either. I’ve lost weight off my face and whilst nothing sags as such, I just don’t feel I look pretty.

Can anyone help with some budget-friendly ideas of things I could do or products I could look into that I could use to do a bit of a “glow-up” on myself? Feeling a bit fed up and want to invest in a bit of self-care! Would also love to hear from anyone who has felt or is feeling the same way for a bit of support and motivation.

Supplements might help things. Vitamin D makes a real difference to hair growth. Supplements containing biotin and betacarotene for your skin. I think personally while you can put on makeup and have a haircut, looking well and healthy is always the best solution.

WileyCyrus · 13/07/2025 09:04

Thank you @Quirkswork for your reply. Supplements would be a great idea, I’ll look into them more. I’ve read good things about Marine Collagen for hair so might think about ordering some ☺️ I do agree it comes from within

How long is your hair? My hair has always been thin and dull. I've recently got a wolf cut and love it. I do overnight curls every night, stick some volumising powder in to 'scruff it up' a bit, spray with hairspray and it's done. Very low maintenance 😊

ItsBouqeeeet · 13/07/2025 09:06

Oh and getting your eyebrows waxed! Makes such a difference 😊

RJ2025 · 13/07/2025 09:10

Marine collagen is a great idea for the glue and for hair and nails too. Drinking plenty of water too of course

It’s just past shoulder length at the moment but the wispy bits don’t really add any length. Definitely need a cut of some sort and perhaps a colour refresh! I’ve been blonde most of my adult life but have let it grow out to try and improve the condition. Hasn’t worked so may as well get it done! Yours sounds so cool!

Agree about eyebrows. I’ve got dry skin and in fifties so been using a cleansing balm (Inkey oat one) and Olay regenerist. Drinking planet of water. I got Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter but daughter has an ELF dupe she says is just as good. Can use as a highlighter or all over face.

Sevenamcoffee · 13/07/2025 09:13

Plenty of water! I don’t want to drink the planet of water

hby9628 · 13/07/2025 09:16

Do you do any exercise. I’m a little overweight which is something I’m working on but I started strength training 3 times a week and the exercise had definitely boosted how i feel about myself. I feel happier, more confident and my skin, hair and nails have improved x

I haven’t heard of volumising powder but definitely need some! What is the brand name please?

hby9628 · 13/07/2025 09:16

Oh sorry I’ve just seen your comment about exercise! Sounds like you’re on a great path. Good luck

Moveoverdarlin · 13/07/2025 09:19

I use a hair treatment once a week, Philip Kingsley Elasticiser - it’s very good but expensive. I would use a subtle fake tan on your face and body. I’d apply every week for the body, every few days for the face. I’d paint nails and toes in a matching colour and buy new make-up. If you want your face to be glowy and less dull, I would invest in some good skin care.

Mine is the same length and I often described my hair as rats tails as it was wispy. It looks a lot fuller now 😊

It's 'VO5 Thickening powder' but adds volume too 😃 think it was £4 in Boots

KPPlumbing · 13/07/2025 09:37

Yes to exercise, supplements, water, collagen, and a "whole foods" diet.

I'll also add castor oil. I've been moisturising with it at night for about 2 years and it's made my skin so soft.

myladyjane · 13/07/2025 10:35

Ohhhh me too! Well done :). I dont know how old you are but I had a thread a few weeks ago asking about how to get a bit of glow back at and got some helpful answers which are probably useful full stop.

I would say eyebrows and nails. I am using a nails inc nail glow product which cost under a tenner and gives a tint but doesn’t show chips (the teens tell me this is ‘soap girl’ style).

Marine collagen has done wonders for my nails although I started to take it for tendinitis. I also take magnesium and vitamin d which help me feel better and sleep well.

consistent skincare which doesn’t have to be expensive. I use byoma products from Amazon/boots because I have dehydrated but not dry skin. But just doing simple but everyday made a massive difference to me.

my next step is going to be body I think. I am a shocker for not doing body lotion.

WileyCyrus · 13/07/2025 21:48

Thank you everyone for your great suggestions! I’ve booked to have my brows tinted and shaped this week and have also ordered some supplements to get me going. I’m pretty sure I’m heading into peri-menopause so need all the help I can get 😊
I’ve also been in contact with my hairdresser…just need to think about where I want to go with my sad, thinning hair

I use sunday riley vit c serum and have started using the body butter as a night cream ( it's not marketed as this but makes my face all glowy and you get a massive jar of it ) also on mj and skim on my face looks great. Hair another story tho thinning and trying to get meds off the doc for it.

notnorman · 13/07/2025 23:28

Try ‘hair and me’ for the tablets. Really helped me

Do they do tablets for women? I thought it was just the lotion which I can't use as I have scalp psoriasis. I tried to order the tablets through another provider but told only for men. I'm going to give my GP a chance to prescribe something, as I get prescriptions for free, if not I will try and get the tablets privately.

SpiralSister · 14/07/2025 08:07

Well done! I am also on MJ and very similar stats to you.

This is what I am doing, and I feel great:
Supplements - all 3 types of collagen, biotin, creatine, vit D, multivitamin with iron. Functional mushrooms, turmeric. Whole food diet with some treats! Minimal alcohol.
Moisturising properly, all over. Giving the new body some love and appreciation.
Adding strength training to usual exercise (walking and swimming)
Retinol for skin
SF50

Enjoy the new you!

Nadine baggot has an instagram and YouTube channel where she finds and tests properly budget friendly stuff that actually works. I’m using some of the Korean skincare she recently recommended and it’s fantastic.

80smonster · 14/07/2025 11:00

Running totally changed my skin. Basically a free facial.

UmberMoose · 14/07/2025 13:26

Have enough water and maintain a healthy diet, it is very important for the skin and also you can maintain a skincare routine. Here is my routine that I follow:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Cerave moisturizer,
Started with Tretinoin (0.025) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
