Greasy hair- how the hell to fix this situ?!

I have really really fine hair, each strand is so fine you can barely see it if you pull it out. But my whole head is covered and I have a lot of hair considering each hair is barely there. My pony tail at the base is probably size of 10p, and my hair is long, down to bra strap. It just seems to get greasy so so quickly. I can only assume this is because it’s so fine, it just sits to my scalp. Has no density to hold itself up. I have balayage colour with bleach and washing it daily just dries out the mid lengths and ends, but then the roots are so so oily oily. It’s the worst combination. I don’t shampoo the lengths, but hard water and rinsing of shampoo means the lengths just end up getting dry. I’m adamant I’m washing my hair properly- shampoo twice, make sure head is thoroughly wet, I lift up hair at the back to ensure I have fully covered my scalp in shampoo and rinsed properly. I then need a decent amount of conditioner on ends because it gets so dry and matted and use a detangle/conditioning spray. This probably contributes to greasiness but otherwise my hair is so matted it’s just getting damaged trying to get a wet brush through it. If I don’t brush when wet, it dries matted.
i can’t keep up with what’s best- dont brush wet hair, yes brush wet hair but with special brush/be gentle/use detangler. Don’t wash hair too often as you’ll produce more oil, don’t leave hair dirty as bad for your scalp. What advice is correct!!
I don’t like dry shampoo, just feel it’s clogging my scalp and I’ll have to wash it all out anyway.
Looking for a shampoo to help me wash Sunday night, and not have to wash again until Tuesday night without looking like an oily teenager in the meantime.
Ive tried Redken, Kerastase, Phillip Kingsley,
grow gorgeous ranges for fine hair. Also tried Aldi our brand bond repair shampoo, Olaplex bond repair L’Oréal volume shampoo, and tried OUAI detox shampoo which seems to clean well but doesnt give me any longer between washes.
am I overstripping my hair so its producing more oil? Can you ‘train’ your scalp (I thought no), am I weighing it down with product but then it’s dry so needs moisture?!
how the hell do I combat all that?!
if you got this far- thanks!

Watching this thread as I could have written this myself!!

I like my hair now more than I used to, but I haven't found the holy grail!
I use L’Oréal bond repair pre shampoo, shampoo and conditioner. I think the pre shampoo does most of the heavy lifting. https://amzn.eu/d/3Zjt2GA

I'm now able to wash it every other day instead of every day. Sometimes I stretch to 3 days. I feel like there was a few weeks of putting up with it looking greesy on day 2.
I finger comb the pre shampoo through my hair and the finger comb the conditioner at the end. It doesn't tangle, knot or matt anymore. I use a microfibre wrap while I'm getting dressed and then finish drying with a hair dryer. If I let it air dry fully it gets greasy sooner. I avoid brushing it when dry because it poofs and frizzes. Finger combing works for me. Thinking about buying a silk pillow case to see if that helps further

Fairy washing up liquid once a week massaged into scalp and lathered up is like a deep treatment for getting rid of grease build up.

DonewhatIcando · 08/07/2025 23:13

No advice on shampoos but I have balayage with really dry mid and ends.
When I conditioner I use a very large wide tooth (big gaps between the teeth) it's actually sold as a curly hair combination and I comb my lengths while the conditioner is still on, rinse then wrap in a microfiber towel (another product designed for curly hair) i don't rub it dry.
I don't have curly hair btw.

Clay shampoo

elvive used to do one in a green bottle but any clay based one will cut through the grease and keep it fresher for longer

CraftyNavySeal · 08/07/2025 23:30

Blow dry your roots so they don’t stay damp for too long and get swampy.

Recently I started using Color Wow dream coat and I can now go for 4 days without washing as well.

I am also quite enjoying the got2be refresh spray, it’s not a powder like dry shampoo. I spray it on and then you can blow dry it dry.

Pinkrabitt · 08/07/2025 23:34

I just wash my hair every day and use a good conditioner. Is your skin generally greasy? Mine is. Not washing my face wouldn't make it less greasy, it would just mean I would have awful greasy spotty skin. Same for the scalp. I wash my face and moisturise twice a day, wash my hair and condition it once a day. The skin on your scalp isn't that different to the skin on your face. It won't magically stop producing oil if you dont wash it.

NewbieSM · 08/07/2025 23:38

You need a good clarifying shampoo, do it twice and make sure you blow dry your hair especially the roots. My hair is the same texture and I find if I let it air dry my hair looks greasier and feels more limp. But also the reality is that this is your hair type and there isn’t much you can do about it. I use the Klorane dry shampoo as it feels a lot more weightless in the hair compared to batiste which is horrendous.

Cut to the end. I’m 62. I have to wash my fine, not so very thick, oily hair every single morning.

In my 20s when it was thicker, and I was backpacking, I could get away with its weight and talc to pep it up between washes. At my age now, it sticks up ridiculously every morning. I wash it either in the sink or kneeling by the shower, just shampooing the front half.

There is no magic solution.

PinkyBear · 09/07/2025 00:00

I have fine hair, wash it once / maybe twice a week.
I do use dry shampoo though.
A) to thicken it
B) cos it does eek out having to wash it

I also use other thickening products which I think help. Thickening powder (by Schwarzkopf) and a Sam McKnight texturising spray.

I used to wash my hair every day. So I think it has been trained (successfully!)

And I then use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the products, a volumising shampoo & a (thingy free - those bad things) conditioner on the ends

Fordian · 09/07/2025 00:01

But, a positive: My friends who for 20-30 years have been able to wash their hair twice a week as it’s not hugely oily, like mine- to put it unkindly, but honestly, have far more aged-looking skin than me, oil-slick though I am. They have crows feet and crepey necks. All expected and perfectly okay in a woman in her 60s.

But I don’t! No one’s thinking I’m 39, for sure, but one of the few positives of very oily skin, going through life, is you don’t get wrinkles to the same extent.

DamnitCarol · 09/07/2025 00:06

I have fine hair, and find the batiste overnight dry shampoo works well! I spray it on underneath the top layer of hair and at the nape of my neck, and then plait my hair overnight and find i can easily get away with a second day.

TartanMammy · 09/07/2025 00:06

I had this problem and seem to have cracked it, I can now go 2 days between washes which was impossible previously.

You need to use a good clarifying shampoo once a week.
The elvive clay shampoo mentioned above is also a good daily shampoo.
Try too use too many products on clean hair, a very light heat protector should do it.
Conditioner used only on the lengths not the roots.
Always blow dry your hair from the roots, don't let it dry naturally.

But dry shampoo is really was the game changer for me, a very light spray over clean roots keeps my hair much fresher. Don't wait until the hair is already greasy, use it as a preventative measure instead . Batiste is the best one, all the others are heavy and seem to make the issue worse.

LindtLindor · 09/07/2025 00:26

I found the blowout professor’s videos on YouTube helpful. You’re already doing some of the tips but he recommends using hair salon shampoo, not anything you can buy on the high street.

I find rinsing with apple cider vinegar after shampooing every so often helps with grease and buildup.

Steelworks · 09/07/2025 04:21

I think the Elvive clay shampoo has been discontinued. Elvive has reformulated their range. Shame, it was the best shampoo for greasey hair around.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/07/2025 04:40

You are washing it too much! I have the same hair. Got very lazy during lockdown and now was it once a week. It is so much better. I do use dry shampoo as it adds a bit of volume.

Highlighta · 09/07/2025 05:45

I have find oily hair too, and did bite the bullet in stretching it out to wash every second day.

For me, it totally depends what I use on my skin. I know this sounds weird, but if I use a thick face product, or something oil based for too many days in a row, my hair gets more oily. People I've mentioned this too say that can't be, but it is what happens. I started using an oil based cleanser and night oil from body shop, within a week hair was back oily roots that could use a wash every day again.
