First time here - could I have some (a lot!) of help to find a mother-of-the bride dress, please? I’ve been trying for ages and even done the John Lewis personal shopper thing, but to no avail. I don’t like ‘dressing up’ so don’t want a hat or fascinator. I’ve tried on dozens of Hobbs, Phase 8 and similar, but nothing’s worked for me. I’m a size 8/10, but have an ‘older woman’ tummy, and boobs but no thighs. Petite sizes are almost always too high in the waist (so uncomfortable) but standard sizes seem to be too broad across the shoulders. The wedding’s in August! Budget is up to around £300 and ideally it’d be something I could potentially wear again. I love green although I’d settle for anything that fits nicely! (I have grey hair and cool colouring if that’s relevant.)

No, it’s actually COS and I think out of stock. I actually ordered 3 dresses for a wedding last year and liked that one best so kept it for the year in case I didn’t find any thing else. Then, because I HATE shopping I never looked for another dress 🥵.
I did get it taken in though, there was a lot of material in it.
I think the one you linked is actually nicer if you have a small frame. I wouldn’t get away with satin fabric… too clingy I think
It was this one

I always wanted a Bombshell dress for a special occasion, I don’t know if these are up your street at all, @Hoogieflip: https://katyawildman.com/collections/event-wear-collection

Hey OP,

I see PP has linked Jasper Conran. I have this for my niece's wedding in a few weeks. It's ruddy lovely on. Definitely size down, though, they're big made. There's also other dresses in green. It's a lovely shade.

I saw your thread - lovely dress and can be worn over and over unlike the "MOTB" stuff.

Twodogsonthecouch · 06/07/2025 20:38

@bouncydog if the op is anything like me they’re exactly what I hate, very stiff formal clothes that I would never in a million years wear in any other circumstances and that I certainly couldn’t dance in.
I agree they look very impressive in the photos, just think they would be so hard to relax and have fun in

popcornpower2025 · 06/07/2025 18:15

Good grief, why would motb wear an expensive green potato sack

Each to their own but of the dresses posted other than the Batsheva, Liberty and the Jasper Conran ones the Kindred dresses are the only ones I'd wear. The JJ's House, Katya Wildman, Gina Bacconi, Catherine's of Partick, Mint Velvet, Shibumi and Coast dresses are horrific.

bouncydog · 06/07/2025 21:07

@Twodogsonthecouch this is just the mob page. The jackets are fab and can be as dressed up or dressed down as you want them. Some of the other suggestions on here are horrific imho!

Gowlett · 06/07/2025 21:16

Couldn’t believe it when I was walking past Hobbs yesterday, the dresses in the window were Coast circa 2010. Peeked inside, it was all very Trinny & Susannah… You deffo need a more modern look. M&S isn’t bad right now, there’re plenty of dross but a good scan could reveal a gem. TK Maxx has some great stuff in this summer. Again, a bit of work but worth it.

cumbriaisbest · 06/07/2025 21:25

Same dilemma, bigger assets!

Size 14.

Sorry but most suggestions are a bit grim tbh.

I don't own this specific item, but I've had a few things from Me+Em and I find their sizing generous. I'd size down, or get the lower of two sizes if you're normally between sizes.

Thank you, that's helpful.

I have this Katya Wildman dress (in a very similar fabric) that’s been linked here already, from when she was at bombshell. It is absolutely glorious and I will be wearing it again in December at my step son’s wedding. Blimey she’s put her prices up though. I think I paid less than half of that at bombshell.

LadyLapsang · 06/07/2025 21:55

Just in case it helps on sizing, I am 5 10 and find Me & Em good on length, so think they may drown you. I think the Liberty dress may suit you, their sizing is smaller and you may be lucky with future price drops. Might also be worth a look at Ede & Ravenscroft.

Thank you. That's what I thought. I've already thought I'll wear to DS graduation next Summer, & I reckon I'd wear it on holiday with flats. I'm so sick of occasion dresses sitting in my wardrobe.

Hoogieflip · 06/07/2025 19:10

This has my name on it, thank you! But, I can't find on in stock 😐. Can you tell me about JC sizing, please? I'm going to order the short sleeved broderie anglaise one and don't know whether to go for the 8 or 10.

I have this too & this particular style comes up big (reviews all said this, so check those out for other styles) so size down. It also comes in cobalt blue, but I know the bridesmaids are blue.

One thing I will say is that I'm v impressed with the quality. So much so, I've ordered the skirt in black as I think it'll do me for many occasions.

As green as green as green as …

They would tailor this to fit you.

tailor it???!! it's a green bin bag😂

veggie50 · 07/07/2025 08:03

Halter neck usually works well with narrow shoulders. There are hundreds of floaty empire line / non waist clinching out there that would fit your shape.

Catherine's of Partick sort of horrifies me, I'm afraid. I just don't have the confidence to wear anything like that

Catherine's of Partick horrifies me too- but not because I lack confidence. They, and JJ's House, are simply horrific. I'm 5' 3" dresses like the Kindred ones don't swamp me.

That Peggy silk dress in the lime green is divine.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 07/07/2025 08:19

My daughter's current suggestion is to wear the dress I wore to her sister's wedding 8 years ago.

Good lord, really? I'm sure we can do better than that.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 07/07/2025 08:22

Hoogieflip · 06/07/2025 17:39

Oooh, I like the look of this. I agree that it's dark, @ColdHenrietta , but worth a try, especially as it's silk - so cool? I have a (bright modern-floral lime green) Brora jumpsuit that I love.

It's a lovely dress but it's a bit wintery looking for August and underwhelming for a wedding. I know you don't want an OTT MOTB co-ord ensemble horror, but you don't want to blend into the background quite that much either.

Still, the fact that you really like that gives us a good indication of your style.
