I don’t know how to dress anymore

I’m in my 20s and a size 6/8. I lost some weight & have been weight training. I got more lean.

But I’m also short.

My current wardrobe for work & going out, just doesn’t fit right and I find myself scrambling to get dressed every day. I only feel comfortable in fitted gymwear or bodycon clothes (which isn’t my preferred style especially at work) or oversized jumpers.

I’m finding the length of trousers and dresses to be much more of an issue now then ever before. Dresses that flare out or are longer length, just awkwardly hang on me. Used to love wearing blazers but they tend to look more like blazer dresses as opposed to professional workwear now! Plus my favourite jeans hang off me now as my glutes are quite flat (hopefully they will fill out in the future)

My waist nips in and from the front I look hourglassy, from the side I do not. Any tips on how to dress and where to locate petite clothing would be helpful! I work as a data scientist in public sector and generally dress smart/professional at work - but I don’t like looking scruffy with unintentionally oversized stuff. Then on nights out, I really don’t know how to dress for a more slender shape!

Next have a petite clothes filter on their website and M&S do a shorter trouser length. I’m short (5’1) and tend to wear more fitted clothes but I know fitted trousers are not that fashionable now

Thank you. And yes, I’d love to wear swishy trousers but they always seem to be extra long! Or just look too wide at the bottom that it looks boxy!

Also I feel like M&S are no good, their clothes always seem to be vanity sized? I have some size 8 stuff that is huge on me now, yet fit me when I was significantly bigger.

There’s a site called Pixie girl which sounds like it fits the bill
Then perhaps post again for help collating a capsule wardrobe For example a cropped jacket rather than a blazer
Im “ petite” and have got more bony as I’ve aged so I can’t wear boat or loose necked tops anymore They slide off!

Oh brilliant, thanks! You’re right actually, cropped things tend to look normal length on me now.

It’s weird isn’t it, how losing weight (ie sideways) makes the length of clothes more of a challenge! I’m not any shorter lol

I wonder if with more expensive clothes, invest in a good clothes alteration person.

Not sure if Wallace is still around but they do petite clothes.

I used to have to take all my new clothes in at the waist. Some trousers I had to have belt loops put in so my trousers would stay up. My legs were so skinny some people used to call me match stick girl. People used to think I was anorexic.

Fortunately I had the boobs and bum genes but my hip bones were razor sharp. Stomach as flat as an ironing board.

I don't know how old you are but I'm sure you'll fill out in time. I started filling out around 29.

You must eat plenty but even with that some people's metabolism is very high.

Also some people have a lot of nervous energy. That can stop you putting on weight.

Eat what you want whenever you are hungry. Just not too much sugar or trans fats.
Also, you might find straight leg jogging pants, which can be taken up or straight leg jeans rather than all the skinny fit trousers better.

Add some plimsoles with a thick sole to add height or just a nice pair of ankle boots to go with your straight leg trousers.

They have lots of shoes on Amazon and I've often found that the waists come up too small for a size 10 clothes so i have had to return them. Have a look on there and read the reviews. They normally say if items are true to size.

Just remembered another thing....I used to wear leggings under my trousers sometimes. Just made me feel bigger. Everyone who knew understood why. None of my boyfriends ever questioned it because they wouldn't be staying on for long in their view 😂

Oh how I wish I still had that problem at 57! 🤣🤣🤣

Good luck x

Actually Zara and Topshop might have some clothes that'll fit her.

HarkerandBarker · 06/07/2025 01:29

Just to add since I'm going back down memory lane I think Morgan and Phase Eight are still on line. Their clothes come up small. I used to wear little bolero jackets too. There's probably a lot more around if you look online. Just look for the style of clothes rather than the type.

A few recommendations for you… River Island, Warehouse and Oasis do good petite ranges.

For everyday work trousers, wide legs and jeans Stradivarius petite are good - find the full range on ASOS.

For a more expensive option Reiss petite are lovely.

For work blouses and knitwear, Boden have the best sleeve lengths. If boden is not your thing then Zara is great for smaller fitting clothes, they don't do an xs small in everything now which is disappointing.

Never Fully Dressed have a great petite range.

Brandy Melville aren’t a petite range but the are slim fitting so something like this blouse would be nice for work.

Good suggestions on here.
Also, sometimes you can find lovely made-to-order clothes on Etsy, where you can make sure the size is right for you.

This seems fairly safe bet, very versatile and is on sale -

This looks nice too

Just make sure you’re buying from a maker, not reseller (check profile etc) and message them your measurements.

Zara are small. I’m a 6-8. Well more like a 7-8 and I fit Zara small. They go down to XS and sometimes XXS so they will definitely fit you. I don’t find thing too long and I’m only 5’3”

uniqlo do trousers in different lengths and they also shorten for you. Their sizes go down very small. Japanese after all

Shetlands · 07/07/2025 20:28

Karen Millen has an extensive Petite range from UK size 4 upwards. They have a sale on at the moment.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 07/07/2025 22:04

Pixie Girl is the same company as Yours Clothing and their quality has gone to shit...I'd avoid.
