Are tank tops everyday wear?

I have one which my mother once bought for me. I haven't worn in a long time and I wore it today, and I hate to say, I kind of like it.

Is it a middle aged thing? Am I turning into my mother? Are they acceptable everyday wear (to the office?) or something best confined to one's own home?

I think you will find we say "He is in the lavatory" 😁

“In the lavvy” is very common where I come from.

Funnily enough, I have noticed that, in general, Scottish people (of which I am one) tend to be much more comfortable than the English saying the word “toilet” to mean the WC/loo, when referring to the entire room.

I noticed it recently on an episode of Location Location Location in Glasgow- I realised how unusual it sounded to hear the house hunter say she needed “a downstairs toilet” - Kirstie and Phil usually say WC or cloakroom I think, then upstairs it’s usually “family bathroom” or “en-suite”, avoiding the need to say “toilet”. When I was growing up the downstairs loo was universally referred to in our family as “the wee toilet” 😀.

This thread reminds me of one of my favourite emails ever, from 20 years ago when I lived in the US for a while. From Victoria’s Secret: Free Tank With Every Lip Balm.

I love a knitted tank top.
Perfect in spring and autumn when you want a bit of extra warmth but without the bulk of a sweater.

I love a Wallace and Grommit style tank top. They can be quite expensive though, I had some cracking ones in the early 2000s, should have kept them.

This is a tank top as I know it (mid-30s):

I absolutely love them and find they’re extremely versatile. You can wear them casually with jeans or shorts, or dress them up with a skirt or underneath a blazer for work. They’re so good! I live in them.

The company even calls that a vest…
Which it is.

I agree with everyone saying that calling vest tops tank tops is a relatively recent thing in the UK, influenced by American usage. I generally frown upon pearl clutching about Americanisms, but I admit I find the term 'sweater vest' unaccountably irritating and can't resist saying it with a very crawly American accent Grin

It’s what came up when I typed in tank top into Google to be fair - and that is what I personally view a tank top to be. Is it an American thing?

here’s one by Skims

Lol, I agree! I would call that a knitted vest or a knitted tank I guess.

Yes, I think it is an American thing. Companies change their marketing to appeal to the largest market I guess. I will never automatically think of a vest top if someone says tank top though. A tank top is a settled thing in my head.

I’d just call it a tank top…
Simple.
