Which is least damaging to skin...

...waxing or shaving?

I've always shaved, but fed up with the almost daily faffing about.

Heard waxing lasts longer and hairs grow back finer, but what kind of effect does it have on your skin?

TIA

Waxing lasts an awful lot longer but does hurt more (obviously!) My skin is alwasy a bit red straight after then fine the next day.

waxing won't hurt your skin in any way, but I used to get only about 3-4 before they started growing again- the you have to wait about 6 weeks til they are long enough to be waxed again.

I always found that in between stage annoying- don't know what anyone else does? it's not like you have smooth legs on day then hairy legs - and ready to be waxed- a few weeks later.

even after years of being waxed- ouch-= I didn't find my legs less hairy or the hairs finer- they just don't have blunt/sharp ends like they do when you shave.

hls, I take it you meant 3-4 weeks before the hair started growing again??

WatsTheStory, I am thinking the whole body part needs waxing .

No broken veins - plenty stretchmarks, though.

Would I soak myself first - open the hair folicles and would I need any special lotions after?

Please forgive my ignorance.

Thanks again

SIL is a doctor and reckons that waxing makes the skin stretch and sag, I think she meant more for the face than body though.

fanjolina · 25/05/2008 09:04

Waxing does damage the pores and cause some skin damage. Shaving is a pain, but I have been told that the best way is to just shave every day in the shower - very quick, and not as much hassle as you would think.
I did try laser removal of hair, but after £600 of sessions I gave up as it just wasn't effective (I think my hair is too light).

Wuxiapian · 25/05/2008 12:20

WatsTheStory, yes, would certainly go to someone. Self-inflicted pain? No, thanks.

saadia, makes you wonder if the stretch/sag thing applies to the body, too.

So, fanjolina, it seems there's no good hair removal method skin-wise.

Ah well. Shall have to continue to suffer. The inequality of it all...

waxing, done properly is beneficial to skin.
it is the ultimate exfoliater. and if using a good wax, or preferably sugar, then moisturising to skin too.
shaving on the other hand, just a bad idea really. nough said

fanjolina · 25/05/2008 13:28

My dermatologist always told me off for having waxed due to the damage it causes to the pores, even if done properly. So I am not convinced that it is beneficial to skin.
