Mother of groom outfit.

I had my son young and he is getting married soon. I’m about to turn 40 and need a Mother of the groom outfit that isn’t too old fashioned. He wants the Mum’s to wear a hat or fascinator. I’m on a tight budget and can’t justify more than a few hundred max. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

A few hundred pounds is perfectly doable. How about you say something about you, rather than him - so posters know what to focus on …

I have olive skin and brown eyes with lightened hair. I like classy colours rather than bright colours but that’s only because I don’t suit them. Chat gpt typed me as a soft autumn palette and I’m hoping for something a little younger than what you would see normally. I look younger than 40 so I feel I would look like I’m playing dress up if I wore something like a dress and bolero/cardigan, paired with a huge hat.

What about a wide legged jumpsuit and either a headband, fascinator or hat as requested.

I think fascinators are quite dated, so I would go for a hat and one that isn't too match-y match-y.

What style would you want? A dress? Separates? Trouser suit?

Have you looked at Vinted. I got a lovely dress for £3 for the last big family party I went to and it kept me smiling as I had only told a few people about my dress. I can understand you probably want something new apart from the fact some people only wear things once and then sell it on.

Are any of these your sort of thing:

Doen

Em & Shi

Ganni

My DSis just found a MOB outfit from a designer dress agency shop. Do you have a similar shop near you? They had a great choice many BNWT. No pastel horrors, just some lovely brands: Rixo, Cefinn etc. She picked out a gorgeous Self Portrait dress that fit her perfectly. Sometimes less choice is better than too much and trying on in person is invaluable.

Thank you all. I’ll have a look at the links. I think a dress rather than separates

How about something from Realisation Par? Their pure silk dresses are just superb.

This for example:

Or this:

which would be magnificent dressed up with wedding level accessories.

As suggested up thread really do go onto Vinted - I have had fabulous occasionwear bargains that have clearly been worn once for a wedding or similar - think Hobbs, LK Bennett - if you are paying £50 for a £300 dress and jacket you can then go for it with your accessories

ForFunGoose · 27/06/2025 12:50

Mint velvet or Never fully dressed have lovely options for your age and budget.

MrsMitford3 · 27/06/2025 13:08

Fascinators are very dated.

I think wearing one puts you in the MOG vibe you are trying to avoid!

gianfrancogorgonzola · 27/06/2025 13:42

Look at me and em and then check Vinted, they have lovely dresses

YourWinter · 27/06/2025 13:42

Vinted and charity shops are the answer.
