Hi all,

I'm looking for a sense-check on something I’m thinking of for my hair.

i have naturally red hair, going browner as i get older, not vibrant red. I’m quite happy with the colour in general.

I'm getting more and more greys and, initially I was thinking of just letting them come. I had hoped that my hair would gradually change to a more sandy colour with the greys (they are actually white). However, a photo of my head at an angle I don’t often see has shown me that there are way more greys than I’d thought!!!

I really don’t want to have to pay to have my hair dyed and roots done every 8 weeks (my hair grows really fast), nor can I be bothered with the effort!!

I was considering using a box dye.

I'm thinking if I get a honey-blonde dye it’ll cover my greys but probably won’t make much different to the colour in general. I assume it won’t have bleach so won’t make my red hairs blonde.

Then, over the coming years, as my hair gets more white, it’ll actually appear to get more blonde until all the red is gone.

i don’t want to use a box dye to dye my hair red. I think it can be too vibrant for my taste.

Will this be the gradual move to blonde that I think it will be or is there something that hairdressers know about this that I’ve missed?

Also, any recommendations on a box dye to use?

Thanks 😊

i think all blonde box dyes have bleach. I am not a hairdresser, but think you want some kind of a temporary rinse not a blonde dye. someone will weigh in I hope.

If you use a permanent dye where you mix two bottles together, it will contain peroxide which will lighten your natural red hair.
Try a semi permanent which will last about 12 washes, although it will contain peroxide in a smaller quantity, it won’t be strong enough to lighten your natural hair colour. You want something warm, as your base colour is red, so a medium golden blonde should take the ashiness out of your greys.

Thank you, I’ll try that @Rina66
