Decent supermarket clothes

Just gazing at my ironing pile (glaring) and feeling nostalgic about the lovely cotton tops that supermarkets used to sell. I have one here from Tesco that I’m particularly in love with - simple, lightweight cotton top with beautiful green floral patterns and little button detailing. I wear it just for a few months a year and then it’s packed away again until the following summer.

It’s lovely but will only last a few more years before becoming too threadbare.

No where, NO WHERE am I able to find a replacement. Forget supermarkets - all polyester ‘blends’.

I know this topic has been done to death, but there just isn’t anywhere easy on the pocket to buy nice clothes that don’t make you sweat and whiff unnaturally.

I have been quite impressed with Sainsburys clothes recently

My 3 coolest cotton blouses that come out every year are 10+ years old and I can't even tell where 2 came from but the 3rd is from Debenhams and made in India I can just about read the labels.
They are few and far between, I agree.

Also, better to pay a bit more for better quality. I have a charity shop top from Marisota, great quality material, like new.

JamPotJenny · 22/06/2025 08:34

Oh I definitely pay more for quality now - I’m 52 and fast fashion isn’t part of my life. Vinted has been great for linens and pure cottons.

TU had lots of nice cottons and linens this year. And viscose, which is generally a better choice. I always find more expensive stores are full of polyester too. I prefer to shop online where you can filter by fabric.

Op i might have that very top! I certainly have something similar. Anyway, Seasalt are really good for these. Look on Vinted as there always seems to be loads on there.

I came on to say Sainsbury's as well, several cotton monsoon type tops. They seem to be starting their sale already too.

Doesn’t have a little rounded faux collar? Sleeveless? It’s my favourite ever top! It’s so light, you barely feel it on!

I’ll take a look at TU today - thank you.

Agree re the higher end shops. I ventured into Cos recently and it was all blends of linen and cotton with viscose and polyester. Still charging the earth for it too.

*Never bought from Cos brand new. Never will!

Yep that's the one! Sort of a bit of a 60s style collar? It's funny, I bought it years ago and two women I worked with also bought it. We had to agree when we would wear it. Tesco did lots of other patterns in it but I liked this one - sort of a vintage print.

PuceisNotGreenWhoKnew · 22/06/2025 09:54

Can we see the top? Please?

TU have a beautiful Cutwork cotton dress in yellow or white which keeps selling out.

George does some nice cotton summer clothes if you hunt their website.

JamPotJenny · 22/06/2025 12:25

This is it. It’s the most comfy and lightweight top ever and I feel very feminine in it. Have looked everwhere online for it!!

I don’t think it’s uploaded yet. Image is being reviewed.

Try charity shops, OP. The only way to get cheap clothes now that aren't made out of horrible material.

JamPotJenny · 22/06/2025 12:35

That’s a good idea. I’ll keep looking!

Yep that's the one! I'm not sure where mine is though!

PuceisNotGreenWhoKnew · 22/06/2025 14:51

That’s beautiful, thank you very much. It reminds me of a Cath Kidston print and style.

henlake7 · 22/06/2025 17:08

I think you can still get cotton or viscose tops in cheaper places, you just have to be prepared to check all labels!
I know Ive gotten some nice stuff from F&F, New Look, Primark and Poundland!
Although it feels like looking for a needle in a polyester haystack sometimes.
